  • Do you carry PIP on your car insurance?

I've carried PIP/Personal Injury Protection on my car insurance for a long time, at least the last 20 years. The benefit of PIP is the coverage is immediately payable to you and anyone in your car if they are injured, regardless of who is at fault. No waiting for liability decisions or settlements from other carriers, or settlements from your own carrier if you have to use uninsured liability. When health insurance deductibles and coinsurance can reach $5k, $10k per year or more depending on your plan (or if you even have health insurance), that can be tough for a young person to afford if they are injured in a car accident. So, enter PIP. The benefit on my policy covers up to $25k and up to $200/week income loss for up to a year. The coverage costs $35 per insured vehicle every 6 months.

I'm not sure it's needed anymore. An adequately stuffed EF/emergency fund and HSA/health savings account are for covering things like big health insurance deductibles and coinsurance. I don't ride around with a car full of friends anymore - not that I don't have friends - but they all have their own cars So I've considered dropping the coverage.

Do you carry PIP? If so, what is the value equation for you?

Myrdale - we transferred servers. The old one just had too many issues. There was some data loss as part of the transfer process, but the tech team should be restoring these soon - like in a day or so.

Ok, that makes sense. I swear I hit "post" on the original one yesterday. This is the replacement after I saw the original went missing this morning. Figured it was some kind of data loss.

Yeah - sorry about that. I've told the team, so the data should be coming back soon.

I'm currently with GEICO and pay $4000 a year for these same coverages with this AAA insurance quote for $3220 a year. I'll be switching to AAA insurance.

During the AAA car insurance quote it asked if I intend to use my car for Uber, Lyft, DoorDash, or Instacart which I answered no. I imagine if I said yes, my quote would be 2x or 3x.

Many people do say no to those questions and then they use their car for those things anyway. It's a good way to FAFO, lose everything.

Holy smokes your insurance is expensive QMM. $3-4k per year?! And that's without UM coverage, and $1k deductibles. Ouch.

In this day and age I wouldn't be without uninsured driver coverage.
There are a lot of uninsured people out there behind the wheel.

Actually if you said yes they probably wouldn't cover you at all.
