  • Saving on flights

A few tips to save when booking a flight:

Don't wait to book too late, booking too early may also cost you more

Check rates often, as they are constantly changing

Mid-week flights are typically cheaper than weekends.

Take advantage of loyalty programs, miles, and cash back through your credit card

Third party or hotel booking may save as opposed to booking directly

Watch what you take for luggage. Keeping items to a carry-on bag only save. This may make sense for a short trip, especially if you may be able to buy what items you need once you get to your destination

Be really careful about this one. Not booking directly can bite you in the butt if anything goes wrong. If there's a significant delay or cancellation you could be screwed. The airline won't help you because you didn't book with them.

I always book flights and hotels directly through the company, never through a third party, even if it is a little more expensive. I've read way too many horror stories of people having their trips ruined when a reservation wasn't honored or some other problem arose.

2 weeks ago I paid $160 on American from LAX - HNL, for the return I paid $260 on United for HNL - LAX. Later I add 1 checked bag each way for $40 each way. For both flights I booked directly (no 3rd party). The $160 fare fine print said something like no changes allowed. The $260 fare had a change allowed for 1 years worth of credit but I didn't need to change but good to have if needed.
