Apple is introducing call screening in iOS 26. Unknown numbers and numbers not in a known contact list will be answered by the phone and callers greeted and asked to state their name and reason for calling. That will be transcripted live, visible on the phone's screen so the user can determine whether they want to answer the caller, ignore it, or send it to voicemail. It's similar to the live voicemail functionality they already use today, but better. It will likely be part of a broader AI push for automated call screening and filtering.
    History will judge the complicit.

Hopefully that's optional and can be turned off. When my phone rings, unless the screen says "Spam Risk" or "Telemarketer" I'm answering it. Many calls that I receive are from numbers not on my contact list. I don't need them screened for me.

      * Despite the high cost of living, it remains very popular.
      * Why should I pay for my daughter's education when she already knows everything?
      * There are no shortcuts to anywhere worth going.

Yes, unlike many AI features as of late, I read this can be turned off. Live voicemail is an existing feature and can also be turned off.

This is a feature that Android (at least on Google Pixel) has been running for a few years now ... I love it. Maybe once a month it intercepts a real phone call, but humans will typically get through it no problem. All of the spam calls get rejected quite reliably.

I came across a service the other day called DeleteMe. They claim for a fee to be able to remove your presences from data brokers on the internet. While I am generally careful with my personal information, and I have had my identity stolen before, up till now I haven't been to concerned over what information is out there.

The spam filter only catches about half. They almost exclusively call on 334 numbers so recognizing them is easy. For a while now I have been running Do Not Disturb, where only my contacts will go through.

Most real calls I get are not from people on my contact list.
