  • The value of a great attorney - another EF category

I'm hoping nobody ever needs to go through a situation like we did, but our attorney removed a LOT of financial and other stress from our lives.

In a nutshell, DW was in a 2 car MVA late last year and had serious injuries. While at the ED, I learned that she was likely at fault. When I had a little time, I called our CPA/attorney for advice and he suggested a colleague of his, who I contacted. The next day, this individual called me and held our hands pretty much from that point until final closure about 6 months later.

Had we simply pled guilty, we would be looking at points and fines and possibly more. This attorney was approachable by text, phone and email at all hours. He stood by DW at the 2 court appearances. He called a couple times out of the blue to follow up on DW's recovery. He found ways to present the totality of the incident and was able to get the judgment down to a parking ticket. That last part blew me away, there is no way a mere mortal like me could have done that. Our out of pocket is $1000 retainer and $243 for court costs and fine.

My takeaway is that your EF is a good fit for this type of expense. A bad situation can be made not-so-bad with good representation, which also reduces stress significantly.

Absolutely. So many people forgo legal advice because they don't want the expense but they fail to realize that doing that often ends up costing them way more in the long run. We've used attorneys for numerous things over the years and have always been very pleased with the outcome and thought the cost was worth every penny.

I hope your wife is doing better.

My only expense with a lawyer has been having my will put together. It was about $450 at the time, and her expertise was worth it to know it was done correct.

I have one friend who has a child by an ex-wife and another by another woman. They both have had him arrested on nonsense charges on several occasions. Each time the judge has thrown the charges out. I think his lawyer should be going after those two more aggressively for the false charges, but for what ever reason they aren't.

I have another friend who was a stay at home mother for a decade, while her husband cheated on her for years. She ultimately walked away and let him keep everything. I am furious over that. Come to find out her lawyer was previously his lawyer.

My opinion falls inline with what Dave has said in the past. Find a divorce lawyer who is so vicious and nasty, you don't like being in the room with them.

I have no experience on car accidents or suing others.

My understanding is that when needed, find one who specializes in the topic at hand, rather than a jack of all trades.

Glad the lawyer worked out for the OP's situation. Good lawyers are worth their weight in gold.

So your wife was at fault and you still lawyered up to avoid any penalty even though it was her fault? Bravo. That's the American way!

I hope you're never in a situation like ours. There were other factors in play that I didn't feel were relevant to be shared here.

The true character emerges of the self-righteous like a basketball that cannot be held under water. Inflated sense of their own righteousness and believes others are wrong. Karma holds the scales and you get what you give whether good or bad.
