Update: I told them that I would be contacting the local popo and magucakkt the housekeeping staff went and purchased a brand new pair of Ray Bans, precisely the model that they found and then lost. They are being shipped. It’s anazing that they remembered the exact model, but i have always heard that housekeepers in FL have a photographic memory.

Make sure your son knows to put all the blame on the housekeeping. Thats by far the most important lesson to learn.

Speaking of sunglasses...I just realized I purchased my oakleys when I was 18. They were only around $100 at the time. Still have them to this day...17 years later. I almost paid $5/year to own them. I personally would never buy another pair of overpriced glasses. I have a $40 pair from REI that are just as good...and polarized. Humble brag over...goodbye.

How much he spent on sunglasses is beside the point; most of us spend an insane amount on something - $6 daily lattes, vapes, a case of beer, whatever.

My personal view is travel light and keep all of your stuff in one place and double check your bags and once the room is empty make one last pass through to confirm. It works for hotel rooms, and it works for hiking the AT.

First and foremost the son is absolutely irresponsible for losing them. It's his property and he failed to keep up with it. But besides that this opens up some interesting debate.

There are many things they could have said:

"They are in the mail, but I didn't get a tracking number, maybe they got lost?".

"They are in our safe available for your pickup".

"We will mail them to you when you send us $20 for shipping and trouble".

"We cleaned the room and they may have been discarded".

Above all they could have said "Glasses? What glasses?".

In every case listed above, the cleaner is walking around with a new $177 pair of sun glasses.

At the point the cleaning service stated they found the glasses, they became stewards of your property. Their back peddling saying they didn't find any glasses isn't going to help them once they admitted to it. You could take them to small claims court over it, but honestly it isn't worth it in my opinion.

yeah, like i said, if you step up the pressure and simply make it not worth their while, they'll think twice about pulling some crap like that. I'm not saying that the business isn't above board or anything, but even a legit business would want to avoid this type of attention. Now a business that possibly is paying employees under the table, have other customer complaints, possibly employees "gray legality" housekeepers, etc. would definitely not want attention from the police. You stole a pair of sunglasses, now are being investigated by ICE. Not too bright...

Very true, IMO it's not worth it either, and texas makes enough money that its not worth it to him either. But sometimes, it's the principal of the matter matters more.

This is so funny. So comically dishonest that is it just hysterical. Whatever happened to good-old-fashioned morals and truth-telling. Is it really that hard?

My gosh, these folks have done A LOT of work to keep from doing the right thing.

It is this type of thing that makes me the kind of crazy that throws on a pair of Depends so I don't have to stop the car while driving there to bust some chops.

Well I filed a complaint with the BBB and that got action. The owner originally responded that I am basically on my own as they aren't responsible for lost or stolen items.

I countered that I agreed, except that they acknowledged recovering the item, and at that point, they have at least some level of custodial responsibility for the item.

They finally offered to reimburse me $165 for the glasses. I am returning to them the fake pair.
