  • Graduation gifts

My son just graduated high school, and his mother and I were thinking about all of the traditional graduation gifts we used to give and get, and what they have been replaced with:

    Watch - smart phone
    Calculator - smart phone
    TV - smart phone
Computer - often the smart phone
    Weather radio - smart phone
A book to read - smart phone
    A Bible - smart phone
    Camera - smart phone
    Answering machine - smart phone
Compact Disk - itunes card on phone
DVD - NetFlix card on phone
Cassette player - itunes on smart phone
Headphones - earbuds connected to smart phone
    Alarm clock - smart phone
Wallet - virtual wallet on smart phone

    Technology has sure changed things!

We all still have wallets though.

That's exactly why I tend to push back when people say that cell phones aren't a necessity. While that's true in the "you won't die if you don't have one" sense, if you don't have one, you're probably going to spend more money overall because of all of the other devices that you need which your phone could replace. And there are multiple other things that could be added to your list.

I'll take cold hard cash. I made out pretty good at my graduation party.

Oh, you're right. I had not thought of that so clearly.

We always do cash. Can't go wrong.

I don't think TH was asking for advice for a gift. He was just pointing out how the smart phone has replaced so many other items that we all used to have and used to be common gift items.
