  • How much does a million dollars weigh?

The probability of someone having $1 million in their pocket isn't unlikely because of the amount of money but more likely the amount it weighs... Even if it was all in $100 bills, it would still weigh about 22 pounds.

Here is the breakdown of how much a million dollars weighs in pounds:

    $1 million in 100s = Around 22 lbs
    $1 million in 20s = About 110 lbs
    $1 million in 10s = Approx. 220 lbs
    $1 million in 5s = About 441 lbs
    $1 million in 1s = Approx. 2,205 lbs

$1 million in pennies = More than 550,000 lbs

Thoughts on this? Does any movie actually depict someone carrying a realistic $1 million (or more)? Any movies depicting realistic cash weights anywhere?

Interesting question. How much do a couple of electrons weight? It's all floating around on servers these days.

Usually any movie showing this, is one that involves money for a ransom payment. Most kidnappers don't ask for a lousy million anymore, they want a couple of them, and somehow the payor is carrying the money around in a backpack/gymbag or briefcase/suit case. So according to your weight chart, not very likdely.

What weighs more: 100 pounds of feathers or 100 pounds of metal?

I think there are plenty of movies or TV shows where someone shows up with a briefcase or duffel bag of $1 million. 22 pounds isn't all that much so they could carry that pretty normally, though it would be heavier than what usually appears on TV.

I'll tell you something that always stands out to me even more is when someone on TV is supposedly drinking a cup of coffee and it is blatantly obvious from the way they hold the cup that it's empty and weighs virtually nothing. Would it really be that tough to fill it with water?

I can't think of any examples, but I think it is entirely realistic to imagine someone lugging around a briefcase that is roughly 27 lbs in total weight....

I don't understand the relevance to the original question, but I believe it's something along the lines of 0.000000000000000000000000018 g.

            African or European pounds?

Ha! I never thought about this, but you're so right. They may spend millions of dollars on production but can't "spring" for the water.

I'm sure they just don't want anything spilled and they don't want the actors actually drinking, just pretending to drink. Maybe weigh down the cups with something so it looks real though.

The briefcase full of cash always looks real. I'll have to pay more attention to how they are holding it from now on. I guess even if it isn't real money, just blank paper would still weigh about the same if it's an equivalent amount.

Good point - I'm sure it'd weigh about the same. For the most part, slinging around $1 million is pretty unlikely though haha.
