Well, no one can really tell you whether something is worth it or not, because everyone has different needs and wants, and assign different levels of value and meaning to their material purchase.
That being said though, if you want my personal opinion anyways, the iPhone X is NOT worth the money.
* The new Bionic processor is nothing short of breath-taking. However, iPhone 8s also uses that for less money. That or the previous gen A10 processor was working just fine as well.
* FaceID is amazingly well-executed. However, TouchID still works perfectly fine, and in most cases is also faster.
* The new swipe interface is nothing new actually. Been around since the Palm Pre days, and can be found on Androids as well. It just became necessary because Apple eliminated the iconic home button on the X. Still, I do acknowledge that it is very well-executed.
* The OLED display is still unproven in terms of whether it will have burn-in issues or I'm sorry the politically-correct term is "image persistence". I suppose Apple fanbois will blame Samsung for that one since of course their favorite brand can do no wrong (while conveniently ignore the fact that Samsung's own AMOLED have been around literally for years and have no equivalent drawbacks... and yes, I know they are technically different techs.)
* The notch. I acknowledge that it's an aesthetic point of contention, sure, but I thought Apple was the master of aesthetics. Why couldn't they have at least smoothed it out into a slim forehead (without third party apps)? In this case, they seem to have made what I see as an awkward design decision just so they can brag that they made a true bezeless phone.
* Apple's latest gen phones are finally getting IP67 dust and water resistance. Wonderful. This is actually a feature that I would personally pay extra money for. That said though, the iPhone 8 also has this rating for less money, and for that matter, plenty of Android phones have had that rating for years now. Still though, I will say that this is a compelling feature to buy into the iPhone 8 because having that, and especially if you add a protective cover, your smartphone is pretty much bullet-proof for the normal user. Enough that you can certainly save some money by foregoing Applecare.
I am probably missing other things, but this is what comes to my mind at this moment. If you are just looking for a good, clean smartphone, and you don't care about branding or even OS, then you can certainly find a similar (Android) phone for less than half that price... such as the Moto X4 for example, which has the even higher protection rating of IP68! Of course, it's not Apple though, so you would have to forego Apple's walled garden, which admittedly may or may not be practical for your family, and of course, your son won't seem as "cool" to other kids at school.
But you didn't ask this at the Cult of Apple. You asked this at SavingAdvice, and my personal advice is to save your money and skip on the iPhone X for now. Granted, their first bezeless model is a very good attempt, but I would wait for the next gen (model XI?) and see how things really progress. I think it won't be long before they achieve a true bezeless, and when that occurs in maybe a year or two, it's going to make the iPhone X look very dated. I mean it already does to me, but I've already seen similar techs like this for a while on the Android side sooo....Last edited by Tabs; 11-15-2017, 02:41 AM.

If you're a lover of Apple, you probably always will be. So, as far as being happy with the electronic device, it will definitely be worth it.
However, I wouldn't personally spend that amount of money without having some sort of investment. For instance, my grandmother will buy the newest iPhone but she's got numerous shares of Apple stock. She considers that to be supporting her investment (she only invests in companies she believes in anyway).
That being said... The new iPhone looks great. I swapped my iPhone out for a Note8 in September and have been very happy. So, I would go check out multiple phones with your son (if he's not set on the iPhone). He may find something he likes better (that's a couple hundred dollars cheaper).

People buy iphones for one of two reasons..
1. They're used to it and do not have the learning capacity to switch to an android.
2. They want to brag to their friends at starbucks about the latest iphone and how hip it is.
And this is coming from someone that has an iphone due to my work providing/paying for it. If I had to pay I would go with an android. I refuse to pay the insane prices for an inferior product such as apple. Every feature except face recognition is already being done on android phones yet people still eat it up. The sheeple just dont get it.

iPhones vs Android is purely up to personal preference. Nothing wrong with preferring one over another. They are both great phone OSs and Apple's hardware is top notch.

I kind of don't like iphones. They just are not intuitive to me. My daughter has the iphone 7, and I keep having to ask her how to do things. I still don't know how to turn it off completely. But she bought it with her own money, so I don't care what phone she has. I'm just shocked that she hasn't lost it.
OP, if you really want to buy it, then buy it if you have the cash. Spend your spare money on whatever makes you happy. I buy things just to make my daughter happy quite often (just not $1000 worth of happy) because it makes me happy too. But if you have to make payments, then either make your son chip in or wait.

I have owned an iPhone since their iPhone 3G model. The cost seems to be always on the increase, though, and although I can't imagine switching, especially as I use iCloud and have so many notes and photos saved on there, I'm not sure I can continue justifying the expense.
I absolutely love Apple stuff. I also own an iPad but when it comes to their phones, it's somehow very rare for me to use it for more than 1.5 years. They start giving issues. I have the iPhone 7 at the moment and I bought it in February this year. I keep having issues with different apps just shutting down on me. I had the iPhone 6s before this one and I had to change the charging port, speakers and headphones port once. The Home Button also was giving me issues by the end of its 1.5 years lifespan...
I would think that a phone costing so much money would survive for a longer time.Would I buy another iPhone after the 7? Most probably.... but I'll try to stretch this one as much as possible.

Also, I've never paid more than $400 tops for any phone in my life. I'm not sure if I am mainstream or not though.Last edited by Tabs; 11-24-2017, 09:58 AM.
