  • If you have a Chase Freedom card...

Walmart is one of the "5% categories" this quarter.

this is probably the worst offerings for a rewards period that I've seen from this card (for me at least).

    Walmart and Department Stores.

I've had this card since January 2011

What do you mean? Christmas time is probably the best for Walmart. (Besides, we buy our groceries at Wallyworld, which is why I got a CFU, since the CF card excluded Walmart when grocery stores were the quarterly bonus.)

like I said, for me, these categories aren't the greatest - I prefer gas and grocery stores, etc.

WalMart scares me, but I usually find myself there once around christmas time.

Dept stores - hit or miss for me. Might sway me to find gifts at them this year.

Guess they lost their deal with Amazon... I believe that was a category one year at christmas - that was a good one.

5% at WalMart is a great deal. We go back and forth between Target and WalMart. In recent years, Target has been going downhill while WalMart has been steadily getting better. We find ourselves picking them over Target more and more.

Thanks I just went and activated the offer. I don't recall WalMart ever being one of the 5% categories, has it?

I have to admit I'm a bit of a hypocrite, as I don't care for WalMart, but I grocery shop there because of the price matching. It sure beats running all over town to pick up the loss leaders. I'll actually earn some of those rewards this quarter.

Not to my knowledge. I'd have noticed before now.

I'm really happy that they have Walmart instead of Amazon this year. Of course, I have already cashed in our points for a Walmart gift card and had to pre-order the hot toys before now. I don't think I will get much use of it this year, but I hope they keep Walmart for next year. I should try to change the credit card on file. I think they are shipping one of the preorders today and I might be able to get it in under the wire.

I really need to replace the Chase Freedom card with something that better matches my spending habits. They almost never have 5% on gas or groceries anymore, and the majority of my spending is gas, groceries, and gift cards from the grocery store. I have nothing against Walmart, but the closest Walmart doesn't have groceries, so I never have reason to spend money there.

I like Chase Freedom Ultimate for:
                    1. across-the-board 1.5%,
                    2. using the same website as my Chase Checking account, and
                    3. ease of instant cash back.

(Of course, CF also meets criteria 2 & 3.)

Not a bad suggestion. Realistically, I should just start using my Chase Amazon card more. It gives 2% on gas and groceries. But, I got it with the intention to only use it at Amazon and don't usually carry it with me.

agreed. the amazon thing was good.

And you really need to watch out on the "department store" thing. You should check first before large purchases. The store needs to categorize itself in the correct category otherwise the purchase won't count.

On the bright side, I believe purchasing gift cards should work for walmart and discount stores for the 5%. But DYODD>

Off the top of my head, they had both earlier this year. And last quarter was restaurants, which is good if you eat there. I mainly use the card for hte special categories.

They did, but it was only one quarter each. It seems like every year there are fewer quarters with those categories. I don't eat out much, and when I do, I often use gift cards. The free fuel program at the local grocery store works out to an extra 6-12% off gift card purchases, and it's really hard to beat that. The fact I'll buy gift cards from the grocery store for just about any large purchase means I value grocery store cash back a lot more than anything else. I'll probably wait to see what the 2018 Chase Freedom categories are before deciding if it's time to get a new card.

unless you really are worried about credit score, nothing prevents you from getting the new card now anyways if you see one you like.
