  • Please help me verify this is a terrible idea!

My husband and I lead two different financial lives. I’m a saver, he spends his paycheck as soon as he gets it. I’ve always had savings, never in debt. He has $0 savings, doesn’t seem to care about getting a 401k plan, has no idea what he has in retirement from his last job, is in about $15,000 of credit card debt, not to mention $10,000 student loan debt and $8000 motorcycle loan debt. He just thinks in the moment and always says “Oh everything will work out”.

Our friends run a slushy machine business where they own a few machines and rent them out to parties. They seem to be doing really well with it. They have a website and they both come from a business background—him marketing and she accounting--so they know what’s going on. My husband has been on this huge kick about how we need to do that and how he needs to talk to them about it. He has NO idea how to run a business. This is a guy who has half a dozen half-done projects around the house because it gets to the point where he doesn’t know what to do or he loses interest. He’s got three broken motorcycles just sitting in the garage that need to be fixed, a hole in the backyard where he wants a pond, which hasn’t changed in 2 years. He talks the big talk about ALL this stuff he’s going to do with the yard and the house, but all he really does is sit around on his days off and play video games and drink. He has no motivation, yet he is so set on this idea of how we need to buy a couple of machines (which run $800) and start our own business. He sees it simply as “Well we just get a couple machines, put up some flyers at work and around town because people will want to rent these machines, then we deliver them and pick them up the next day and clean them and just keep doing that”. He has no clue about everything else that goes into it. And for someone who can’t be motivated to finish house projects and is in so much debt, he wants to buy up these machines and give it a go.

Please tell me I’m the sane one here by not being on board with the idea!

Of course you're the sane one.

I can't help but wonder how you guys manage the household and joint financial decisions and expenses.

        Simple

I'll never get into any kind of business dealings with anyone who doesn't care about debt.

In the real world, you can't just wish your debt away. Your husband shows zero urgency about his personal debt, which means he'll not care if a business is failing.

agree with singuy. I would say he should think about it when he has all his debt paid off, money in an emergency fund and money in his 401k, then he has the luxury of taking on businesses he is unlikely to maintain. He sounds like the perfect guy to listen to Dave Ramsey

I like the Slushy idea. It's not that different than renting out those inflatable play things that kids bounce in.

A friend of mine who loved farm animals would actually rent the animals out for birthday parties. She had chickens, ducks, a couple of goats, rabbits, and even a cute little ass.

The kids loved it an she charged like $200 a pop for a couple hours.

It seems like the two of you have separate finances? If so, just let him do what he wants to do.

Just wondering how you plan to handle finances in the future? When you are both retired, and you have money while he has debt, how will you handle that?

What about when he buys these machines and loses his money because he doesn't have a clue what he's doing? And then can't pay his share of the mortgage or other household expenses?

                  How is your marriage surviving?
It doesn't sound like you have anything in common and that pretty much every aspect of him is negative and bothers you.

If he wants to buy a slushy machine let him do so. Just don't put up any of your money.

I would say, "That's a great idea. We can fund the new business with the money you get from selling the 3 motorcycles and your video games and then use the profits to pay off your debts."

What's the plan right now for if he can't pay his share of the mortgage or other household expenses? He has 23k of consumer debt already and no savings.

He already can't pay his share of the mortgage or household expenses! I pay 99% of everything. He's too concerned with paying his own credit card debt ($15,000) and motorcycle loan ($8000) student loans ($10,000). All things HE caused himself. I remember a few years ago when I was upset with him having $500 of credit card debt. That sounds like a dream now!

He sees the slushy thing as one more thing that may help him get out of debt. His mom is the exact same way. She has tons of debt and keeps having these ideas of starting a bakery business. Buys these storefronts and never puts anything in them.

Sorry but you don't need financial advice. You need a divorce attorney.

I'm gonna say it again, I'm not a huge fan, but he so needs Dave Ramsey to kick his butt into gear. An $8000 motorcycle loan when he still has student loan debt, give me a break!
