At the credit union it was really easy. Haha. Just see how much debt they were in, the deposits that came in, and expenses that went out.

The worst ones that I saw were the guys with lifted trucks, 2 other toy cars, an RV, boat etc. and they had to apply for skip payments and whatnot because their lifestyle was getting way ahead of them.

I think a better question would be how to spot a truly rich person. There are a couple of people I've worked with in the past who were ridiculously wealthy, and you'd never know it by looking at them. One of them wore sweatpants with holy t-shirts all the time, and the other one never EVER wore socks and was always covered in dorito bits. Then you move down the line to the slightly less wealthy people I've known and sure, they have the huge houses and the nice cars and whatnot. Then down to the people who want others to think they're wealthy, and they drive fancy cars too and live in McMansions, but our IT guy used to look at their emails, and they were always emailing their spouses to complain about money problems (don't use your professional email for personal problems, people!).

So, I try not to judge a book by its cover, because you never truly know.

Totally off topic but was it well known that work emails could be read by other people in the company? Is that a common practice?

It definitely was not well known. People tend to have a false sense of security with email accounts. You should always assume what you're writing is being read by someone, regardless of what company policy states.

Ever see the Cosby Show episode where he buys a car? Goes into the dealership dressed to look average. All goes according to plan until one of his patients sees him and yells "hey doctor!" Salesman then realizes what is happening.

Anyways, by appearance and my frugal ways, I like to believe that I do not give anyone the impression that I have savings and own my home with no mortgage.

And that is fine by me.
