We are currently in Florida visiting/helping my terminally ill cousin. The main task on our To Do list was to help him set up in-home care. He is on hospice, but that only involves a nurse coming out once or twice a week to check on him. He's now at the point where he needs assistance with daily activities, bathing, cooking, cleaning, etc. Medicare does not cover that so it's totally out of pocket. The hospice social worker gave us a list of agencies in the area. We called one today and they were very nice. Their coordinator was able to come right out to do his intake.
We are starting service at 8 hrs/day, 7 days/wk. We'll increase it as the need demands. The rate is $21/hr. That's for someone who will cook, clean, run minor errands or shopping trips, do laundry, help with bathing and personal care, etc. So that comes to $1,176/wk or just over $5,000/mo. Fortunately, he saved well during his working years and the cost is no problem at all. Even if we get to 24 hr care, the 15K/mo won't be a problem for however long that lasts. Unfortunately, it probably isn't going to be more than a couple of months before he passes but we want him to have all the care he needs for however much longer he has.
I just thought I'd post this to give an idea what something like this goes for. I'm sure the price varies by locale. I actually didn't think $21/hr was much at all. I was afraid it was going to be more than that.
