  • Economic Impact Check

Week before last I received a check in the mail, $498 which claims to be from the IRS with and it states "Economic Impact Act" or something very similar in the memo. The previous stimulus checks were direct deposited to my account, so I was surprised to receive a physical check in the mail.

I've asked a handful of people (friends and coworkers) if they have received a similar check and it seems I am the only one.

Has anyone else seen something like this?

    Here is what google says,
"The IRS started issuing the third Economic Impact Payments to eligible individuals on March 12, 2021, with more payments sent by direct deposit and through the mail as a check or debit card in the weeks that follow. The IRS will continue to issue payments throughout the year as tax returns are processed."

So, I believe the first round of payments (for the third stimulus payment) was based on the 2019 tax returns unless you already filed your 2020 tax returns. I think there was a little bit of a delay if you were in that phase out.

And, then I think they took another look if after your 2020 tax returns were filed and you qualified (where you might not have done with the 2019 tax returns).

Did you already receive the third stimulus payment? Are you in phase out amount?

It sounds like you are concerned it might not be legit. If you show it to your bank, they may be able to advise you.

My mom got the full payment direct deposited, and then they also sent her a check in the mail again for the full amount. I think it's because my dad died in January and they got confused between her 2019 and 2020 tax returns or something. Anyway, I just had her void the check and mail it back to the IRS, easy peasy.

I received an electronic notice from the IRS today via the usps informed delivery.

I clicked the Learn More link

entered my info and it said my check would be deposited on March 17 (which it did).

I’m hoping this notice is for my 2020 newborn who wasn’t in their records but should be by now. And it’s just usual IRS communication breakdown.
