I am biting my tongue on the subject of firearms, but this statement is worth having someone say something against.

There is a huge difference between states like New York or California and say Iowa or Kansas. Populations, demographics, general morality. The electoral college protects us from mob rule. A national popular vote is three wolves and one sheep voting whats for dinner.

As this has absolutely nothing to do with the topic of the thread, let's not go down that road please. Thanks everyone.

      * Despite the high cost of living, it remains very popular.
      * Why should I pay for my daughter's education when she already knows everything?

Driver's licenses are already, to a degree, national. If you get your drivers license in California and want to drive to Texas, then every state along the way automatically honors your license. Can you imagine if you had to get a drivers license for every state you wanted to drive through?

There are several connections already in place for all 50 states (actually 51, since District of Columbia has a DMV). If you apply for a license in Oregon and have a revoked license or unresolved DUIs in another state, your application will bump against the national driver database and be denied in Oregon. The same as stolen cars being reported locally but going into the national database.

That being said, not all states have the budget to have state-of-the-art computer systems to connect with everyone else. But it's still better than having a national licensing bureau and waiting months for anything like the IRS or Social Security.

A little off topic but Real ID question, with a non-Real ID & a valid passport card (not passport book), can I fly after Oct 1, 2021 when the Real ID becomes law?

It looks like a passport card still counts. Real ID only applies if you want to use your license as your ID.

Thanks DS. What confused me was that a passport card (not passport book) can only be used for land or sea travel to Mexico or Canada. Therefore, I extrapolated that the passport card (not passport book) cannot be used for air travel at all. But as long as I travel by air within the USA, my non-Real ID along with the passport card will be valid for air travel within the USA after Oct 1, 2021. A little confusing but it all makes sense to me now.

I wouldn't be surprised if they delay the Real ID again. DMV offices were closed for so long due to COVID and even now I think they are only operating on a limited basis. We haven't even thought about getting our Real ID yet. I do think we can schedule appointments for that, though, so it might not be that difficult.

..Also I like having options and not have everything nationalized ..but if the state would still can have their own layer on top .. it's not such a bad idea.

We don't need more government in our lives at any level

If we get more government in our life, make it at the local level

It's funny because earlier today, I said something to DW about us needing to do this. It was on my mind because we're flying tomorrow. I'm glad they delayed it again. Apparently only 43% of folks have gotten it so far so they couldn't possibly enforce it yet.

I would like to see more nationalization of licenses. Like why should doctors, nurses, pharmacists, etc have to get individual state licenses? Why can't we just have a National license and then providers can easily move or go fill in at other states, etc? Why can't a driver's license be national? People are far more mobile now and having to get a State license or permit, etc for all kinds of things is obviously just a State money maker.

That would make too much sense.

Then if there was some disaster in NY, I'd be able to easily drive up there from NJ and help out. Or I could help bring medical care to a rural community in the mid west by doing telehealth from my home in NJ. Right now, both of those things are technically illegal. Sometimes in the case of an emergency, they'll waive the state license requirements, but that requires legislative action.
