  • No more Gillette Razors for me!

Okay, it's not so much about the money as it is the feeling of wasting $20.00 every time I need to buy an expensive 4 pack of Gillette Razors.

I finally tried the Harry's Razor Blade "Club" and switched from Gillette after nearly 35 years of forking over money. Currently I don't shave everyday so a 4 pack of blades lasts me for about 1 1/2 months or so at $20. a pop.

Harry's Razor Club is $15.00 (+$1. shipping) for 8 blades that are automatically sent to me every 3 months. Best of all, for me these new blades are just as good as Gillette and each blade lasts just as long.

(And no, an electric razor has never really worked well for me)

I use the generic disposable Gillette brand...2 blade 10 pack...costs $3...removes the hair from my face. Not sure what else I need out of a blade?

Those disposable one's at least for me cut my face to often. Would be a cheaper alternative though. I wonder how many of us start with a certain product when we're young and keep buying the same old thing for the next 50 years. I'm sure I'm guilty of it, creature of habit I guess.

Well the marketing folks certainly do what they can to combat that.

I shave with an electric, the same way my father did before me. And today, my daughter has an identical electric to mine that she uses on her legs.

When I have some really special occasion, I will shave with a blade but I'm not picky. I'll use the generic disposables. I have tried the newer, thinner, multi-blade razors and I will admit that they do a smoother job, but I don't think they're worth the price. I do pick one up on occasion when I find a free coupon, though. That often happens when a new model first comes out so be on the lookout for those.

My husband invested in a really nice Merkur safety razor handle, and we bought a pack of a hundred or so feather blades. Now the only expense he has for shaving is the occasional, maybe yearly, refill of (super cheap by comparison blades), and shaving cream.

He tried one of those dollar shave type things prior and hated it. And he was a lifelong gillette fan prior to that. He says that the feather blades beat all of them.

I used to have a merkur futura brushed color safety razor. I have no idea how people can get a close shave with those. I had to do multiple passes and I still couldnt get the hair off my face like the cheap disposable ones. I had no interest in learning how to use one of these properly...the faster I can shave and get it over with the better. Sold it on ebay for $20 less than I purchased it for. Lesson learned.

He says it is not about learning to use it properly, it is about finding the right blade. The feather blades are incredible, he says. The other ones are awful.

                  Love the Multi-Blade Safety Razor

This young man uses a multi-blade razor. Yep the blades are expensive, but each cartilage lasts 3 months(not trying to save, just usually that long before I even realize I have not changed the blade on my razor), so it is well worth it. Honestly was really surprised, normal one was lasting a couple weeks, maybe a month, but by the end of that month it was pulling pretty bad.

I do think the quality of the more expensive blades is definitely better and that they maintain their edge longer. That's not really a surprise. It's like the difference between buying a top quality kitchen knife and a cheapie one from WalMart.

What you need to decide is if that difference is worth it to you for the way you shave, the texture of your beard, the sensitivity of your skin, etc.

I tried harrys and I didn't like it, so I then tried one called Defender. It worked better so I kept it, but my wife preferred harrys over the defender. lol

To be honest, I don't see any benefit to the 4 blade desposibles I bought and used for a couple months each. I shave several times a week, no cream or after shave. Just got used to it, and I shave against the grain to be smooth. I can't stand leaving anything. I'm wierd, I know.
