I like to keep at least one paycheck in cash, in a safe. I would ultimately like to keep 3 months worth, but I worry about break-ins.

I don't think keeping money at home is safe. I usually keep around $500.

my 11k is not from under the table payments, it's totally from first paychecks then disability checks and it would earn nothing in my savings account. Physically counting the hundred dollar bills periodically makes me more inclined to save even more. I'll deposit it soon, into my no interest savings and start working on saving another batch. It's simply a savings tool that works for me. I could put in an interest bearing acct but it hardly seems worth it for 1%. It's easier to have all my banking in one place.

you really shouldn't assume someone who keeps a certain amt of money at home is shady and hiding money from the gov't, that's a big assumption

I'm surprised the government didn't mandate direct deposit decades ago because of the problem of people getting robbed on the day they all cashed their benefit checks.

SSDI is direct deposit. My LTD, when I get it, is not.

$200-300 or mostly what's in my wallet at the time. I used to keep 400-600 when I had a renter.
"I'd buy that for a dollar!"

Interesting. Is it government or private?

Ah, that's why. I'm still surprised that they don't do direct deposit in 2016.

you can choose to have it deposited, I don't because it helps me save

That's so utterly foreign to my way of thinking. How does it help you save? (Unless you do Dave Ramsey envelopes.)

it takes a long time but as each check accumulates, I see the hundred dollar bills adding up and I refuse to touch the money and am motivated to save more. At a certain point, I deposit it and start over. It works for me, which is odd because I am like Disneysteve and use CCs for everything and think it makes me spend less than cash because every few days I am checking the categories I spent in. I rarely pay cash for anything so it makes no sense that this makes me save for my EF but it really does. That's just me, you don't have to understand it.

As long as it works for you, and you aren't ranting that we have to do it too...

no need to worry about that!

Usually only $100, thinking of bumping it up to 1k in case of a disaster situation where ATM's are offline or empty.
