  • Marriott gift cards 20% off May 11-17

If there's anything good that comes out of the whole COVID mess, it might be some great money saving opportunities.

Marriott is offering 20% off gift cards for the next week.

We are big Marriott fans so I plan to take advantage of this for sure.

Honestly, pushing gift cards is a smart strategy across any sector right now, even at a steep discount like this. It pulls revenue forward into these slow months while everyone is still in quasi-containment mode.

I'd love to take advantage, but I've just got too many other stuff pulling at our purse strings right now... In the middle of moving back to the lower 48, buying DW a car ASAP, and a house in Jul-Aug. If I had a spare $1k to toss at this, I'd be happy to.

That's certainly understandable. You've got a lot going on. I do plan to buy a car this year but I've already got the cash set aside for that. And partly thanks to COVID, our spending is down a few thousand YTD. We don't have any travel plans right now but we tend to make our plans last minute anyway, especially for short get away trips close to home. I'll probably buy 3K worth and save myself $600 on some future travel.

I have been hesitant to buy gift cards because I am concerned that there may be companies that have to file for bankruptcy. What would happen to the value on the gift card, I wonder? We have gift cards for AMC from Christmas. I'm not sure if they will be able to open after getting the all clear for corona-virus.

But, we have a couple of upcoming reservations for Marriott that would be nice to get 20% off..... (But, then I'm not sure we will be able to use the reservations....) Decisions, decisions....

Usually gift cards are still good after a company files. Once they start liquidation sales if they are closing for good, in the case of retailers, the cards are usually no longer good because those are actually run by a third party. As for Marriott, I've seen nothing to suggest that they will be going away.

As for AMC, I saw the report that Amazon is considering buying them, but who knows what will happen with that.

I'm going to take a chance and buy some Marriott cards today. I guess it could backfire on me and I could lose that money but I think it's a reasonably safe bet.

We ended up buying about $1500 worth of gift cards. We have already used some for a trip last week and we have another trip coming up shortly-so, for those it was a "no-brainer". We have another trip planned this summer that would take care of the rest of it, but with DH delaying retirement I'm not sure we will go.... But, as long as Marriott doesn't go "belly-up" we can save it for the future. And, I will most likely be kicking myself for not buying more.

I was thinking that given enough time to think about this, it would have been great to buy some in Euro's and Pounds (though, not sure that was even an option) for our make-up European travel--though who knows when we will go since both DH and I are in that older cohort.

Yeah, I was torn between buying a ton because I know we'll use it eventually and being more conservative.

I ended up buying $3,000 (so cost me $2,400). We have nothing planned. Honestly, I don't see us doing much of any traveling any time soon but they don't expire so I'm happy to get the 20% savings on that money rather than it sitting in my Ally account earning 1.5%.

I saw that. Not a bad deal at all. Of course, we haven't used a penny of the ones we bought yet so I'm good.
