Someone told me to buy auction cars. But I never had the nerve. She said that I needed to go to a mechanic and tell him to buy me a car for $x.

That's essentially what I asked my B-I-L to do. "Here's what I want, and here's what I can afford." He lucked into exactly what I wanted after only 1 month. But he's the only mechanic I'd trust like that.
