  • company loyalty and productivity?

DH's company has treated him well during this corona virus. They are very understanding how productivity is affected by working from home. Maybe under normal circumstances it's fine. But home with kids and another working spouse? Trying to "homeschool" it's just not happening. I've friends saying that it's impossible. Yes it is. Because if you are a normal WFH person with a family you likely don't have distractions or children needing you during your "working" hours. So everyone talks about how employers will see how "productive" people will be from home and not want to go into the office. Everyone we know in life and work is dying at home trying to work with kids. Those without are climbing walls especially those who are single and live alone.

Really? The sense I've gotten from neighbors is more than ever people want to go in because they can't get anything done. That people are sitting in their cars, showers, pantries, closets trying to do virtual conferencing. As I've gone into the office DH has told his coworkers and been told, sorry my kid needs me BRB. That screaming distracts him and there isn't a way to get around it. Sure if it were normal work from home and no kids and no interruptions.

But are companies really going to see how much better it is to work from home? Or will they reel in working from home because they see a lower productivity? My cousin's BF had a WFH policy at his company he said 10 years ago. People took advantage of it and stopped paying for childcare. The lower productivity = reeled back in WFH. They wanted to implement it again to "save" on desk space, but they made people sign agreements that they wouldn't cancel childcare.

Do you think your company will allow more remote working? Do you think people want to work more remotely after this? Are you really more productive right now? Or is it more survival mode?

I think it really depends on the individual and the nature of the work.

My niece is a programmer for Google. She is single and lives alone. She can easily do her job from anywhere in the world as long as she has a computer and good internet service. Sure, there are team meetings when they are all working on a project together, and those could be done in person, but her routine daily work can easily be done from home. In fact, she's probably more productive at home due to the lack of distractions.
