OMG, my cognitive issues were bad today at Apple. There were a bazillion people there so it was so noisy, I couldn't concentrate on what the salesperson was saying. She explained the Applecare month to month plan, where at 12 mos you pay for 1/2 a phone again and continue monthly payments. You never outright own your phone. Well, I truly do not want a new phone every year, I don't need the hassle of learning a new phone that often. So I thought this plan was not good for me. i wanted to pay for the phone, sell mine to them for $200 and straight out buy Applecare. (Consumer Reports just had an article that Applecare is the only insurance they recommend on products) She kept showing me that the math was the same and why would I give up the chance to always have the latest and greatest phone? I was so confused but it sounded like people who lease a car and never own one, they just keep leasing. So thinking I made the right choice, I left.

my tech-y brother tells me I made the wrong choice, the money comes out the same. But I am still sure it doesn't because you have to pay for half of a new phone I don't want yearly (well, you can choose not to upgrade, I guess). Whatev, me and my half wit IQ do not get how it is the same and I walked out with a good turn in price for my old phone and I will pay off the whole shebang on next month's credit card bill. No monthly payments I really don't want. Not sure I really needed Applecare at all since I am gentle with phones but by then I just needed to leave.

tomorrow, off to wrangle with Cricket. My parents have ancient flip phones they can rarely even figure out how to answer, it's been years and they will not let me set up voicemail or how to use the texts they are paying for. Which are important because they both have serious medical conditions and need working cells. There have been so many times voicemail or texting has been needed and they can't do it. My mother leaves hers off except to make a call because of "money", then drives when she should not be driving. She can end up stuck at an MD office all day or is having a good day and is just running errands but we can't confirm that she is ok because her phone is off.

When my mom is having a great day and can remember how to call me on her cell, this is our conversation, "Mom, talk into the other end!" "What? I can't hear you?" Yelling, "Mom, talk into the other end!" "these damn phones are useless and we are throwing hundreds of dollar bills away! (more like 2 twenties, but who's counting???)," eventual BEEP that she has let the call die. So my father is bringing them to Cricket because the family plan costs less.

Great, I will have the Wonder Twins on my plan, they will expect me to know how to use their new phones (learning new things is not in my wheelhouse right now) and blame me when all they can do is sometimes answer it before it stops ringing. I hope they don't pick some cheap Cricket smartphone, and I can convince them to get new flip phones. I have to tell the salesman no smartphones when my dad isn't listening.

I have blocked out the entire day to make the switch to Cricket, lol. Please pray for my sanity!

We've got T mobile 10 gb each line for 3 lines for $120/month. Works in canada. Seemed like the best deal at the time and you buy your phone. I like it. It would have been 4 or 5 lines for $120/month if my mom had been willing to relinquish control but she refused. She likes to have control and pay more. So she isn't willing to give up her own cell phone plan. She isn't willing to compromise or allow me to do anything. I would just buy and send her a phone but she was screaming at me over the phone about not learning and not being happy so I gave up. I don't care.

It's not about money just do whatever is easiest. It's not worth the fight with elderly people.

Yeah, that rep was full of it. You very likely wont need the 5GB. I normally would not either but I drive between offices a lot... so I am in my car listening to streamed music quite a bit. When I am at home or work, I am on wireless, so my data plan is not being used at all. Many people dont have enough sense to get their phone connected to even their home's wireless connection.

It was a full half day at Cricket and we have to go back tomorrow because their computers went down. Smartphones were a dollar so my parents now have them. This is not going to be fun, I can manage my new iPhone because they set it up for me with everything from my old phone at Apple. But generic smartphones that I have to teach to my elderly parents? I don't know if I can do that with my cognitive issues. Thank God we live 4 miles from Cricket because I think I will be spending a lot of time there.

When my dad called Verizon to cancel, they told him the 2 "free" flip phones he had, he's actually been paying $300 for them over time. I thought he was going to burst an artery. With the family plan, I will be paying $30 tax and fees included for unlimited talk/text and 2.5gb data. Works for me! I am saving $35 a month!

I broke the news to my mom that she now has a smartphone. She was furious, I had to lie and say they don't make flip phones anymore. I told her about the $300 they had paid unwittingly and that this new place would save them lots of money, and I will teach her how to talk, text and voicemail on her phone. She can ignore the rest. She threw me out of the room. I am happy I live at the other end of this house!

I did look at that it was slightly more than Cricket's family plan but they pay you back for data. The only thing was you can't bring your own phone and I use an iPhone so it plays nice with all my other devices. And cricket had those $1 smartphones for my parents that are totally fine for them. Republic's phones are expensive.

Im pretty sure the main difference is just the speed of the phone. It wont be that big of a difference so i would say just get the 6.

so far no problems with Cricket, found 1 dead zone for data otherwise runs just like it did when I had AT&T.

had one teaching session with the parents to try to accomplish learning how to answer and make calls, texting and voicemail. It did not go well and my mother refuses to let me try to go over these things with her again. These phones are not intuitive at all, I have to google everything. I am never leaving iPhone unless I am just too broke to have one. If Cricket was Apple, they would have free classes to teach you about your phone. If wishes were horses.....

This! We always buy off ebay or CL and have never had a problem. Plus, we save a ton of money buying used.
