  • Dealership quotes parts + labor quotes $$$

After 177K it was time to fix the leakage on steering hose + both front Left/Right CV axle boot assembly kit replacement. I went to Honda dealer to get a full quote after work. They quoted me for parts/number cost $769.00 + Labor installation of $789.00 = For a Total repair cost of $1558.00 tax included . I knew it was going to be high.

I decided to check Oreilly Auto parts near my house--provided them the Honda part numbers for all three. The cost they gave me was $290.00 tax and veteran discount included. And if I return the old parts I can get back $40 bucks. That will give me a total cost of $250.00. I guess they take old parts and remanufactured. Did i get a good deal or what?

Now i need to go to my repair guy for installation this weekend. I'm hoping it will only cost me $160.00 labor.

You got a good deal. Even if your repair guy charges $789 for labor you'll still come out ahead. And luckily the Honda held up for the long road trip. After the repair it'll be ready another one.

The Honda performed well throughout the road trip. No problem except the leakage. I had to bring extra steering fluid just in case.

Our next trip family trip is April to San Diego Mission beach for the weekend. We got a nice deal on a home rental beach front property.

One thing the Honda technician mentioned, most of the parts comes from China. So it made me wonder the reliability of these parts cause them to be cheaper than parts that comes from Japan, Canada or US. I had to replaced the MAF sensor that I bought 3 months ago, only to work for 1 month due to manufacturer defect. I had to buy OEM parts from dealership directly.

Dealer is usually only advantageous if it's under warranty, or if you know the problem involves some obscure model-specific part that you might need to wait for at an independent shop.

Otherwise I try to repair myself or take it to an independent shop.

With 177k on the vehicle already China parts should outlive the remainder of the cars life

            I'm in agreement.

I took the van to my usual repair shop this morning. He's putting the new steering hose plus both front axle for a total labor cost of $300.00. Not bad.

Pick up the van and it drive like new again.

Total repair cost with parts and labor $581.00.

Lucky the guy does the work with you bringing in parts. After my experience of calling around and asking if they just do labor with my parts and getting big fat nos that's a good mechanic.

It's a good thing we live in area where plenty repairs shops exist. This bad boy is good for another 100k. Treated my family a nice dinner with the saving cost last night.

Japan used to make good quality parts. Now with the Takata air bags deaths and massive recall I am beginning to wonder if Japan no longer gives a s*^#.

LAL, suggest checking with larger supply chains in your community. They likely know the mechanics who buy from them and take clients like 97 and WT.

                      I understand the frustration.

But I've owned several Japanese cars (RSX TYPES & SUBARU WRX) add to that Honda Odyssey, Nissan Altima, and TC Scion. I've never had issues nor had to deal with any mechanical, engine, or electrical issues--call it luck maybe. I did owed Dodge Avenger and don't even come close.

BTW: I went on Amazon and find the parts for $180.00 but it will take couple of weeks for the order to arrive and couldn't wait long.
