Taxes done...sort of

So i completed our taxes yesterday morning. It said we owed $5500...which I thought was high but submitted it anyway. This morning, I ran through another online tax program and it said we owed around $2500. So I did some digging...turns out, I entered an amount wrong on a single line...sigh. Once the forms are submitted, you cannot cancel them...you have to file an amended tax return. I cant do that until later February (according to turbotax online.) Very simple return and I managed to flub it. From what I read, it can take 4+ months for the irs to process an amended tax return.

None of this is the end of the world...but now we have to pay out $5500...then get a refund of $3000 a couple months later. ffs

Sorry to hear that.

wonder if the IRS will correct it for you. Meaning I’ve heard folks say that an adjustment was made after they filed that worked in their favor. Or maybe I misunderstood.

I use turbo tax and a custom excel worksheet as a way to check myself before I manually complete the tax forms.

Just my inner geek coming through for a checks and balances on myself versus turbo tax.
