  • TV cable provider wins

Returned my digital receiver ($115/month) to Time Warner. Replaced it with this digital adapter (standard definition, not high definition). Went with basic cable ($14/month), only about 10 channels, no ESPN, Fox Business news, CNBC, etc. Couldn't stand it not having sports or stock market news. Upgrade to standard TV ($70/month), includes ESPN, Fox Business news, CNBC. All is good again. I challenged the TV cable provider and lost. I applaud those who cut their TV cable and won.

I should add that during the time that I had basic TV service ($14/month), I subscribed to sling TV ($20/month online TV which includes ESPN) but my internet speeds was too slow to accommodate it so I cancelled the subscription. In addition sling TV didn't have CNBC or Fox Business news both of which are my staple go-to channels that I cannot do without.

At least you tried!! I applaud you for that.

We have basic with Time Warner and one TV we have a Sports Package which we need to cancel. Not sure it was worth having as we were unable to see as many football games as we thought we might.

So you lowered your bill from $115 to $70. Sounds to me like you won.

creditcardfree & disneysteve, thanks for the support and words of encouragement, I felt like I failed but you are right that I am actually saving $45 a month with my efforts by getting rid of the sports package ($8.99), DVR recorder ($12.95), digital receiver rental ($11.95), and some other charges by switching to the digital adapter. Sometimes I only see the negative aspects but don't see the positive side.

            I had a similar experience...

I was with comcast for 3 years. 3meg internet, basic cable (45 channels)...price was $80.

They had an offer a couple months ago, 25meg internet, 150ish channels, golf channel, espn, etc etc, stuff I never had before. Catch was you had to be a "new" subscriber to sign up for this. I told them it was ridiculous over chat but it didnt help.

I cancelled, signed my wife up...couple days later we had 25meg internet and loaded channels including high def...all for the price of $88/month for the first year. It only cost $8 more a month to have 8x as fast internet and all the channels back.

Ill see how much it goes up after the year...worst case ill cancel and sign up again under my name to get a new offer. I dislike the fact that once they have you they toss you to the side. Oh well...least I have a workaround.

I'd examine the root cause of the part you said that I bolded. To me, it sounds a lot like you became accustomed to having certain entertainment and information, and the change was too disruptive to you.

Spot-on JoeP. For clarification, when I traded in my DVR/receiver to Time Warner and exchanged it for the digital adapter, I intended to keep most of my original channels (with the exception of the enhanced sports package which I intended to drop), but the representative downgraded my channels to the $14 basic 10 channel service (unbeknownst to me). I figured that I'd try it out since the change had already been done but after 1 day of torture (lol), I called them to add back on the standard service for an additional $45.

I find myself craving tv since I miss it. We have internet and an antenna but I find it too difficult to watch live tv. Before with FIOS we had for $75 FIOS and HD-DVR. Now for $60 month we have internet and digital box for a better deal basically 10 channels non-hd (I hate comcast besides price the service sucks). Ugh.

But I'm supposedly getting smarter and saving $15 a month I guess. If I found as good a deal as I had I'd take it. Mostly because for $15 I think it's worth it. BUT comcast isn't offering that deal so I'll have to pass.

I found that after paying for netflix, amazon prime, hulu, sling tv (Things my friends who cut cable have) that it's not worth the savings because all those "extras" you need without cable cost as much as cable.
