  • Modem Rental Grip

I just want to grip. I am in a monopoly for internet. We have frontier who I think was bought by verizon. Anyway since we don't have a choice I pay $50/month for internet FIOS. No cable tv. I pay the taxes and fees of course. But the real aggrevating thing is the modem rental $10/month. So I called and asked to buy it even though I already have modem and they were still charging me. I asked about removing the fee they said that my old modem was "too old". They said it would be $200 I said sure fine I'll buy it. But then it turns out the person sent me an email because turns out I would be charged $10 because it's not a modem rental fee but a fee for repairs. This fee started in 2019. So even though I have an actual purchased frontier modem, it doesn't matter. So even if I don't "rent" The modem I have to pay it. I was aggrevated. Do you have this problem as well?

So much for "cutting" the cord. There isn't a way to really get away from these cable companies. They'll just find out a way to charge you more fees no matter what. Okay so I don't pay for cable. I still need them for internet and they know it.

Yes it's horrible! I haven't cut the cord but I was helping my dd23 get internet set up in her new place. She has Century Link, the only provider in town, and she did buy her modem $100, but for some reason she has to pay $5/mo for her connection to be secure, WTH!! Her total bill is $45/mo.

I forget all the particulars now on the yearly savings, she is still saving by buying the modem but that $5 charge irks me!

They get you one way or another, don't they? We still have a landline and a couple of years ago I was looking at the bill and realized we were paying $5 a month for the privilege of using long distance if we wanted it. We don't make a ton of long distance calls and I called and they said it means you can call long distance. It didn't mean a savings or anything. We use our cell phone for the long distance calling and I said that. I was told that I needed to keep that on the landline so if I wanted to call long distance, I could. I said take it off and they fought with me, but finally did. Of course it means I cannot call certain numbers, even considered "local" and I thought to myself, just another way to get people to drop land lines.
