  • Best place to ditch old electronics?

I have a ThinkPad that's a FANTASTIC computer but it's just too slow for my current workload. And it's showing it's age in many other places, making it a bit silly to upgrade. I'll get a new laptop within the next few months.

What should I do with this old one? eBay? Or is there a better place for electronics. Craigslist has not been good to me in the past.

If you plan to re-sell, it's critical to 'wipe',' clean' and re-install your operating system so a new owner can't access any of your information. Who is your target market? You could try selling on Facebook's Sell Page pricing similarly to others of the same vintage and condition. Does your community have a program to give donated computers to young kids? We generally take replaced or worn out electronics to a recycle depot where it's available to tech geeks who are able to use components.

Ebay, Craiglist, Craigslist free, curbside with "free" sign on it, trash.

        In that order

Weird Tolkienish Figure's list is good except the last item. Electronics should NEVER go in the trash. They are filled with toxic stuff and lots of stuff that is recyclable like lead and other heavy metals.

If you can't sell, donate, or otherwise give away your items, please recycle them at Best Buy. Goodwill also takes electronics for recycling. I'm sure there are other places that do too. Check with your local recycling office.

Yes, it's actually illegal where we live to just throw them in the trash.
