I wish someone has made money this past week. Me on the other hand lost about $5000. I wanted to sell off some of my positions but will hold onto to it and hope for a better week ahead.
Logging in...
With this stock market downturn did you make money?

I didn't even look. I am an invest in 4 Index funds at Vanguard person and sit back and let it do it's thing over 20-some years so far. Talk to the guy, tweak it occasionally and up until I got ill and cannot contribute, I just kept putting the same amount in no matter what was going on with the market. a downturn just meant stocks were on sale. Looking back, this actually worked amazingly well so no plan to change my style now.

There are a lot of agendas and political plots playing havoc with business here. I'm overweighted in Oil and gas because we live in oil patch territory. Figures are ghastly, lay offs, shut downs and soon we'll see foreclosures, the bullet we skipped in 2008 - 2012 period.
I've ridden this roller coaster several times, just hold my nose and carry on with the plan. I too see it as bargain hunting opportunities to beef up my bank ETF, buy a REIT and a couple of stocks I waiver on. I Don't expect a quick fix. As long as I don't sell it's all just a loss on paper, painful but not yet affecting my income. What hurts is our devalued currency, It will likely cancel any travel ideas.

Im sure a lot of people lost money on paper...but unless you sold you didnt lose anything yet.
For anyone who jumps out of the market when things go bad...those people probably shouldnt have been in that position to begin with. Their tolerance level cannot handle it. They may want to start looking into bonds if they cant take the heat.
Did I make money, no. Did I buy more throughout the week, yep. Does that mean I timed the market (gasp!) Ill continue buying next week if the market continues to plummet. If it doesnt then ill wait till the beginning of next month to buy more...like ive been doing all year.Last edited by rennigade; 08-22-2015, 03:24 AM.

I did some tax loss harvesting in my taxable investment account. I needed to reallocate some funds and I sold my international stock index fund at a loss and plan to put it right back into a US stock index fund to balance my international allocation. Got a nice $700 loss to claim against some other gains. Losses suck but can be harvested for good purposes.
