  • Let's talk turkey!

Who's doing what and with all the fixins? I already roasted a 2.75 lb Jennie-O oven ready boneless turkey breast for $9.99. The frozen packet of gravy that came with it actually tasted quite good. Being a single guy with no kids a 15 lb turkey is way too much for me. I may get another 2.75 lb turkey breast next week and get some Stove Top stuffing with fresh celery, cilantro, thyme, sage, rosemary, etc. Along with some mashed potatoes. I usually go to a casino buffet for Thanksgiving or I had been flying home to Hawaii in past years to visit family but staying home this year. Curious as to what others here are planning for turkey day?

No idea. Will get a turkey since we have friends and family.

I love this holiday, because it focuses on two of my favorite things: food & family. We currently have a friend in town, and she'll be here through the next week, so she'll be joining us for Thanksgiving. The tragedy: she's ALLERGIC TO TURKEY!!! So sadly, it'll have to be a ham this year. If I do any turkey at all this year, it'll just be a breast, similar to what you did. We actually did the turkey breast for a few years, when I was single, and also before we had kids. Beyond that, most of the normal stuff... Stuffing, roasted veggies & potatoes, homemade cranberry sauce (a personal favorite, and also fun to cook -- the berries audibly pop as you cook them!), probably some of my sourdough rolls... Maybe a couple extra sides, then of course pie, cookies, & ice cream for desserts.

Such a delicious holiday.... Definitely one of my favorites.

My immediate family has informed me about two years ago that none of them like turkey! We made small individual chicken pot pies (one without chicken for our vegetarian) last year. Need to perfect my dough making abilities on that, but we did have some of the same traditional sides to go along with it. Now I'm getting hungry...lol.

No clue yet. We are hosting, so I'm sure there will be quite a spread. We're probably going shopping this weekend.

We have no plans this year. It will likely just be a normal day in our house with the exception of me being home as I usually work 12 hours on Thursdays but I'm off.

This year is going to be a challenge for me. Most of my family will be in a hotel and I can't find a restaurant that is open and still taking reservations. The other family members that are staying home don't know how to cook. So now I have to cook a large Thanksgiving meal on the 21st, divide it into portions and deliver them to 3 different household plus package up enough for 11 people. Then I have to find a way to fit a small microwave, toaster, magnetic cook top, and pans/serving ware into a duffle bag, and sneak all that plus a large cooler into a hotel and warm it all up without management noticing that I am cooking in my hotel room. And I figure if I'm going to have all of that, I might as well throw in some bread, butter, and Toaster Strudels so we can have breakfast the next morning. Thankfully, my husband will be home on the 21st, so he can maneuver the giant turkey and ham. The freak of nature required to feed all of us would probably break my wrists.

Damn it. I just realized that it will be my mother's 70th birthday while we are at the hotel, so I will have to plan a birthday party as well. UGH!

Because the other family members that are going simply cannot handle it. Neither sister cook well enough and both tend to forget things that they don't feel like doing. The one that insisted that we leave on Thanksgiving made plans to go to her in-laws for dinner and doesn't care what the rest of us do. The others just assume that someone else will handle it. I can guarantee that everyone will wind up in my room asking what to do, and it is just easier for me to do this rather than listen to them complain and have fits for another week. And I don't want my daughter or the nieces and nephews to go without Thanksgiving. They are still too young for that. Plus, a very tiny part of me just wants to see if I can pull it off. A very, very small part, though.

Me and the other half are hosting Thanksgiving together for the very first time so it will be one to remember! We've already picked up our 15-lb. turkey (which I got for $4.10). We are picking up the rest of the fixings tomorrow and have a few family members bringing certain dishes to help cushion the cost. We will have four other people here besides us, for a total of six. The whole meal should cost us about $36 in total.... and I can't say enough about how excited I am hosting our first holiday in our home

First timers often forget to defrost turkey several days in advance! And take out the neck and giblets before it goes in the oven. Enjoy!!

We shopped a local sale at Food Lion. They had a promotion where after buying $35 worth of groceries, you get a turkey for $0.27 per pound. So, we did our weekly shopping there last week instead of Aldi and spent what we normally spend on groceries (about $50 per week). I may go back for another before the promo is over... haha. It is almost too good to pass up.

LOL - funny enough, my grandmother has been calling DAILY to remind me of small things like this, not to forget chicken broth, shortening, etc. She is so excited to not be cooking this year but also worried things won't be right haha.
