    98% of my heating is with an EPA certified wood stove. Used to play the costly propane game until the suppliers would not honor summer contract prices anymore. I like the fact that you can get the wood for free with the benefit of productive exercise.

      Wood insert with electric heat backup (rarely used). Some call it "free heat" until you tell them what all is involved with getting it from the tree to to the insert. The last few seasons I've gotten already cut rounds from tree projects that my company has outsourced, which is nice.

        I think about doing the same since I have propane.

        I would put a pellet stove in the basement but then is there a way to tap into my existing ductwork to heat the house?

          Yes if it has forced air capability. You'd only have to run the supply air fan and use the regular propane furnace as a back up to only come on below a certain temperature. With Pellets you are at the mercy of the construction business since they are made from the byproduct of wood. A lot "easier" than plain old wood but prices can fluctuate.
