  • Zapper electronic payment app

We had dinner at a diner in Manhattan last night. There was an ad on the table for the Zapper app. It is a QR code reader that is also an electronic payment service. You scan the QR code on the bill and can pay with your phone. What attracted me to try it was the offer for $7 off your first Zapper purchase.

Our bill came to $33 so $7 off was a very nice discount. It was simple to use. I don't know if I'll make a habit of using it but if they send out special offers and coupons and such, I'll certainly consider it.

    * Despite the high cost of living, it remains very popular.
    * Why should I pay for my daughter's education when she already knows everything?
    * There are no shortcuts to anywhere worth going.

I could see how it would cut down on the mileage of wait staff having to walk the bill, payment, and change (usually 2-3 separate trips, depending on how the bill is paid). There are times as a customer when I finish my food and I'm ready to jet, but find myself waiting an additional 5-10 minutes to get the bill and pay. If it cuts overhead and increases customer satisfaction, I'm all for it.

My only concern-- anything mobile/electronic payment-related, these days, is the security policies of the app. Data breaches are so common, and a lot of mobile OS and other apps are not very secure. Remember to use a separate password (at minimum) for all financial apps.

At any rate, saving $7 isn't a bad way of finishing out a good meal!
    History will judge the complicit.

Data breaches are common, but we've already been affected by them so many times (Target, Hersheypark, etc.) from in-person card use that I don't really distinguish between in-person, online, and mobile risk. I think it's going to happen to everyone from time to time no matter what. Just keep a close eye on your credit card bills (and use credit, not debit) and immediately report anything suspicious.
