I did a round of unsubscribing to some persistent emailers with whom I had done business--yes, legitimate companies. Unsubscribing was effective.

That's good to hear. I'm sure it will help. I've done 28 so far yesterday and today.

Agreed, unsubscribing is typically effective. One glaring exception, in my experience, is any car dealership. Over the years, I've bought our requested quotes from 5 or 6 different dealers, the first time in 2006. Almost 10 years & repeated unsubscribe requests, all of them continue to email me their drivel. Thankfully, most of these all go to my "junk" email account, which I only check once a month or so. Still, I do try to keep that one clear as well, and find them annoying...

As to the original question, on a normal day I personally get between 5-10 emails daily, mostly from Groupon/Amazon Local, my subscribed YouTube channels, or financial institutions about statements. Only 1 or 2 actual emails personally directed to me.

My job is an entirely different story. Daily operations are run via email to a (disturbingly) significant extent... I normally get anywhere from 30-150+ emails in a day. Organizational distribution lists & the "CC" button are my deepest, most loathsome foes -- people think that everyone and their brother want to know what's on their mind, or want to announce some upcoming event.... I couldn't care less.

I have 3 main email addresses....my Yahoo, my Gmail, and my work. Across all 3, I get hundreds a day.

Yahoo - I've had this email for 15 years, and it's been subscribed to a million things over the years. I use this as my shopping address....I usually delete 95% of what comes into here, but there's too much crap to bother try to unsubscribe. I tend to scan it once in the morning, do a mass delete, and then look a few more times during the day. I'll keep emails from retailers that I frequent, and maybe if something else catches my eye, it will stay as well, but I delete most things out of here without ever opening them.

Gmail - my main personal address. Lots of things have crept in over the years, btu I try to be vigilant about unsubscribing fairly promptly. This is the email that comes to my phone so it's annoying for it to go off for junk.

Work - I don't even bother trying to manage this one. Unfortunately, most of the "junk" (well I consider it junk anyway but it's company wide emails that don't have anything to do with me) can't be unsubscribed to. I do randomly get emails from a wine store in my city that I've never been to....not sure why, but I guess they know, somehow ;-)

LOL. Every year before my birthday, I get a mailing with a coupon from a restaurant in the nearby city. I have never been to that restaurant and have no idea how I got on their mailing list. Perhaps they are owned by people who used to own some other place that I did go to but I've gotten the mailing for years - just once a year. That's the only time I ever hear from them.

I would not include work emails so I would say average maybe couple important emails usually needed a formal response, several automated confirmation emails where I only spot check. Almost every junk mail goes to spam. I don't really care about it, I would check it if it goes 100+ then just spend a minute to check if there are good emails that are not supposed to be there then delete all.

As someone else mentioned, though, even work emails can be a problem when the vast majority of them don't actually apply to you. I don't have that problem as I work in a small office but if you're in a big place, you could get dozens of emails a day that really have nothing to do with you, but you may not know that until you take the time to open them and scan the contents.

My inbox is constantly filling with "chatter" that isn't relevant to me.

It's been about 2 weeks since I started this thread so I thought I'd post an update.

Since starting the thread, I've done over 50 unsubscribe requests.

That first day, I got 95 messages.
Yesterday I got 60 plus 12 in spam so 72 total.

                    That's a 24% reduction.

I realize that my email volume varies day to day so this isn't a totally even comparison but hopefully it indicates a trend. I'll wait a couple of weeks and do another count to see if it stays down.

I received a lot of emails regularly, but those are only auto-generated email from websites or blogs that I subscribed with. But to separate those real emails from colleagues, I usually get 7-10 a day which I already find too many.

Betting my count is pretty close to DisneySteve's.

When I open mine up every morning, I typically delete about 1/3 of the new ones which are just junk mail.
Internet purchasing also gets you a lot of unwanted emails. After a few of those from the same outfit, i typically unsubscribe from those.
Also have friends that frankly send a whole lot of humorous and political BS email that I don't care to read, so just delete it without reading.
Refuse to use my smart phone for email. Enough dang interruptions with calls and texts, without getting a ding every time an email hits the mailbox.

A pet peave is folks in the office that generate half page, long winded emails to a group, then others start responding, etc. We're all in the same building, just call a quick meeting and we can discuss face to face.

I turned off email notifications as soon as I got my phone. I do use my phone to read and send email but I don't need it dinging every time I get one. It would be going off constantly.

my primary Time Warner acct is only given to people I want to have it, I do not want to be barraged in this account. Never had spam that I would see. Got a new MacBook and I'm seeing all the spam and the button to mark it spam is grayed out. I have to look this up and fix it because it driving me nuts in the acct that is most important.

I use an ancient yahoo acct for everything else. Over the years, I have given this email to too many businesses or web sites, usually to get a discount on a purchase. So it is loaded with sale notices, etc. I plan to start unsubscribing because it is just too much to go through daily. I think I need to reconsider my Facebook notifications, way too much from them, same with forums.

Unwanted email is what I really care about, and that, I usually get about 1 per day. I make an effort to squash any spam and unwanted emails whenever possible, since I check my email quite frequently, and it also pops up notifications on my phone.
