  • Tax Slayer >> Tax Act >> TurboTax

I just finished my taxes with Tax Slayer. I found it very easy to use, and it took me about 30 minutes to do my taxes, including a schedule C.

    I was very impressed.

I had used tax act the last two years

and I had used turbo tax every year since 1996 before that.

I was very impressed with Tax Slayer's ease of use and the fact it did not ask confusing or annoying questions. Just input and go.

I'm using FreeTaxUSA this year. I think I'd tried TaxSlayer awhile back. I had issues with several companies the year my husband was deployed and it didn't understand that his income wasn't taxable and didn't need to count towards the EIC. I just keep reentering the information in until a company got it right. I think it may have been TaxAct that year, it wasn't TurboTax!

I just filed mine today with Taxact (used for the last 8 years). Maybe next year I'll try Tax Slayer as I have other friends who use it.

Could you please explain why you prefer it to TaxAct?

        Thanks.

          Here is my summary-

I you want to get a maximum refund, I see why Turbo Tax markets themselves that way. The software asks 10 questions before you give it one input.

Tax Act is similar- it takes 3-5 questions before giving one input.

I don't qualify for many tax credits, I just want to input and get over it.

For example- when inputting a child, on Turbo Tax there are loads of questions about kid on input, and Tax act was similar, it appeared tax slayer just asked for dependant name and birthdate, and check box or two to confirm, then moved on- it was not trying to qualify me for tax credits or similar at time of input (because I don't qualify for full tax credit on child anyway).

My only issue with tax slayer was I did not see a pdf of my return before filing- of course I'm not sure if TT or TA allow that either.

This year I used Turbo Tax because I could get Southwest rewards points for doing so. I found it easy to use just like Tax Slayer and any other program I'd used before.

It's been awhile since I've used them but I've always felt TurboTax and HR Block were a little easier to use online. I use TaxAct which isn't confusing, but I think most new users would find the other two easier to navigate through.

I think some of us can get away with some of these other tax products because we know what we are doing and what we qualify for. I agree with OP, that there are far few questions. I didn't even open several sections of the program I was using because I didn't have anything to input into them. Turbo Tax would have asked me about all of these. And that is okay if you are more of a novice.

Agreed. I do feel TaxAct is getting a little annoying with all the questions when I just want to enter values in the fields I'm aware of. Although I can't complain about filing both taxes for $20, compared to more recognizable business names.

                    what about security?

I had someone get into a credit card account a few years back so I'm a little concerned about a free service online where I will need to enter my Social Security number. All they need is my birth date and they can open up lines of credit in my name.

But I really like the idea of 'easy and free'. (My 'you get what you pay for alarm is going off' )

Does anyone have any idea how secure TaxSlayer.com is?

I just found this on their legal disclaimer:

Can't be any less secure than Target, Sony, Apple, Microsoft, or Intuit's security protocols.

You don't have to go thru all the questions. Turbo tax has a guide me button that asks the questions, and I forget the other name of the other button but you can just go to the sections you need to and input your stuff. That's what I did. I didn't bother with the deductions part because we have no deductions.
