  • Credit Card Temporary Authorization question

Okay, we just got back from an Italy vacation the other day and I've been checking my credit card activity online ever since and I've noticed that there are still 2 "pending" credit card transactions that are listed as "Temporary Authorizations".

I understand how this temporary authorization all works but I'm surprised that these two transactions are still in the "pending" stage after a 2 week period. How long can a charge be in "pending" and why does it take so long? One is a hotel charge and the other a restaurant. At what point will it drop off from pending?

You may want to contact your bank directly - the "pending" should go away once the vendor has finalized the total, but if it has been over 2 weeks it is either taking too long for them to contact your CC company, or the CC company hasn't updated it as they should.

To be safe, I'd recommend calling the CC company/bank and asking them why the charges are still pending.

If charges are pending in foreign currency there are extra steps to completion. Foreign hotels are terrible for holdbacks. I wondered if it's something in their internal bookkeeping system + international banking clearances.

I ended up calling BofA this morning and they were also surprised, one pending charge is a restaurant on Oct. 8 and the other a hotel on Oct. 16th. They said after 5 business days the "pending" charges should have dropped off. They sort of guessed it was because of it being a foreign charge but that it still should have been dropped by now.

They said to just give it a few more days and of course I can always dispute the charge later. At this point I'm more curious then worried.

A temporary authorization transaction is the result of a merchant requesting to confirm that your Prepaid MasterCard Card is active and has a sufficient available balance to accommodate transactions. This request creates a temporary authorization transaction that appears on the Card and in your ProPay Account. The temporary authorization transaction is not always equal to the actual amount, but rather it represents an anticipated amount the merchant uses until the actual transaction is processed.
