  • How much cash do you keep in a safe?

My insurance only covers $200 for cash. I keep $400 cash in the safe. Would probably keep more if insurance covers it. It's just there for unidentified catastrophes that result in the complete breakdown of the ATM system. Gas money to go somewhere else quickly I guess. Don't ask me to rationalize it.

I keep $2000 cash in the house. I don't think just $200 would cut it in the event of an actual emergency/catastrophe.

I've gone into great detail about this in my blog post, Making Over My Reserves Plan (http://retired-to-win.savingadvice.c...rves-p_106516/).

And how much is or is not covered by insurance is really not the point. (Think about it.)

It is if someone breaks into your house and steals it.

Seriously people, a little discretion might be wise here?

I have no idea what our insurance covers. They can't cover much because how could you prove you had the cash?

We keep cash in the home. I'll just say its more than $200. Heck, I have more than that in my wallet most of the time.

Because the information in the blog post is pertinent to the question -- and that way I don't have to write it all again and people who are not interested won't have to even scroll through it.

I do not currently have a safe.... however, I do want to eventually install one, and my plan has always been to keep about $500 in there. Some of each denomination, like 1x100, 2x50, 10x20's, 5x10's, 7x5's, 15x1's ..... or something like that.

We never have more than $300 in the house. And we don't keep it in a safe.

I have a safe. But, there are more guns in it than money.

Guns are better than money in many cases.

Maybe you need a better safe. Isn't it supposed to protect your valuables from thieves?

I think I have $100 right now, just for the rare occasions where I do end up using cash for some reason.

None. I might have about $100 in my wallet. I don't plan for these unlikely scenarios, just like I don't have a plan for the possibility of me getting run over by a bus on Monday which is far more likely than some catastrophic event that will close all the ATMs and bank branches.
