How does daylight savings time save money?

I keep hearing that the reason that we have daylight savings time is because doing so saves money, but how exactly does it save money? I mean, how do I directly spend less of my money because of daylight savings time?

So, basically, daylight savings doesn't really save me any money (maybe a little), but it's good for retailers, who like it because people spend more money. I guess I should have expected that.

In aggregate, DST is a money/resource saver. That doesn't mean it's beneficial for each individual; that will depend on where you live.

I really appreciate the shift of daylight hours to when I'm off work in the afternoons. I couldn't care less about having light in the morning. Mornings are lost to work anyhow.

With more light after work, I'm happier. I eat and drink alcohol noticeably less with the return of more daylight. That saves money.
