  • Is wardrobing legal?

I have a friend that does this all the time. She buys clothes, wears them once, then returns them to the store to get a refund saying that she doesn't like the outfit or it doesn't fit correctly. She thinks that it's perfectly legal and there is nothing wrong with it. As she says, "it's no different than trying the outfit on, just for an extended period. It takes awhile to know if the clothes really do fit right." She also says it's OK because the stores are willing to take back the clothing.

To me, this seems like fraud. Once you wear it for a day, doesn't that mean you have decided to keep it?

I'm sure it is up to the store. I hope they start turning her down, or at least that they do not put the nasty clothing she wore back on the rack.

Sigh. Totally depends on store policy. Shoppers know where this works and where it doesn't.

Not illegal, but completely unethical and gross. It's because of people like her who abuse the system that stores are being forced to put in stricter return policies that are tougher on honest shoppers.

What disgusting ethics your friend has. She is treating the store she frequent as a lending library. It will soon drive smaller shops to change policy and decline to allow returns at all. The only stores that rent clothes that I'm familiar with are costume shops and wedding/formal wear outlets. The clothes aren't free...clients pay rental.

A cheat like that would not be a friend, what scam would she pull on you given the opportunity?

Yes. If something drastic happened like it fell apart after one washing or changed color when exposed to sunlight I think it would be legitimate to return it because it is really poor quality. Otherwise, while not necessarily illegal, as all of the others have said, just plain wrong. Legalities aside, it is similar to shoplifting; the costs your "friend" creates are being transferred to other shoppers.

She's taking advantage of a return policy in a manner in which it wasn't meant to be used. I would say your friend needs to come up with more ethical hobbies.

Unfortunately a lot of buyers do this to the clothing and jewelry sellers on line. they do the same thing 'buy' the dress or ring for a special occasion and then return it and expect the seller to pay the return shipping, etc. they forget that many of these people are little people that barely make ends meet and so they lose money everything this happens as they no longer can sell something new which commands the higher value.

I think it is very unethical and I would also wonder about her morals, and what other things she is pulling. Hopefully you don't shop with her otherwise you will look like you come out of the same manure pile.
