  • Everyone is going to Disney!

My husband and I are going to a wedding in Tampa this month on the 15th, so we decided to take a few extra days and go to Disney. We're so excited!

I never went to Disney as a kid, but I did go for a day a few years ago as an adult when I was at a conference in Orlando. Is it weird that we're so excited as 33 year old adults with no children?

We decided to stay at one of the "value" resorts - the Pop Culture - because we wanted to try staying on-site and it was pretty reasonably priced. People on some Disney boards recommended it because it has it's own bus line, whereas the other three value resorts share a bus line. We thought it would be fun to stay at a Disney property for once - and maybe enjoy whatever "extended hours" you get. We'll also get free parking which we figured was worth $15 a day, too.

We got 2 days of tickets. We haven't been to Animal Kingdom so we're going to go there for the first day and then see where we feel like going the next day.

I know there is already a thread about this, but I was so excited I had to start my own.

We can't be the only full grown adults who love Disney world without kids!

It isn't weird at all. My wife and I went to Disney World a few times before we had our daughter. We've been there twice without her since she was born. Now that she is getting ready to head to college this year, we are very much looking forward to being able to start going without her again. Disney World is a great family vacation spot, but it is also a great adult-only vacation spot. There is a lot to see and do that we have bypassed on the family trips that we will get to do when it is just the two of us again. Have a great trip. Let me know if you have any questions.

BTW, the hotel is Pop Century.

You're not! Shoot, I will go by myself if I have to. LOL.

It sounds like you have a lot of fun planned.

        BuckyBadger,
Do you have a smartphone? There is an AP called My Disney Experience which will be handy for you when you get to WDW. You can also log into My Disney Experience on your home computer and do some advance planning.

I'm sure you've read up on the Magic Bands already in your research. Your FP+ options will be linked to your magic bands. When we were there over NYE, they were still in the testing phase. But, I think they may have gone "live" i.e., I believe FP+ is your only FP option at this point.

You can pick your FP options right now if you have your park tickets and your room reservation. (We were only allowed 3 fast passes per day, I don't know if that has changed). We tried to pick the 3 things that we thought would have the longest wait.
For example, at the Animal Kingdom we picked Kilimanjaro Safaris, Expedition Everest - Legend of the Forbidden Mountain and Dinosaur. When we got there, the FP for Dinosaur was kind of a waste because the standby line wasn't very long. At that point, it was too late to change the selection to something else. (We might have picked Kali River Rapids, but no one wanted to get wet.)
(I'll look around for the thread on The Dis board that ranks the FP choices in accordance with whether it is a waste to get a FP or not. )

Wow! Thanks for the advice! Since the only thing we know for sure is that we'll be at AK for the first day, that's probably a good idea.

I'll look into that - thanks!

You are correct on both points. Paper FPs, also called the legacy system, is gone now. All FPs are the new electronic ones.

Currently, you can only get 3 FPs per day and only in 1 park so park hopping is kind of a waste but everyone suspects this is only temporary. They make far too much money selling park hoppers to not change this.

Yes--though, I have read about some interesting park hopping techniques with the new FP+ where folks go to Park A. at rope drop and take advantage of the lighter volume and then hop over to Park B. and use the FP+ options there in the afternoon/evening.

I could see where that could work-- especially if you start out at Animal Kingdom in the morning and another park in the afternoon. The Animal Kingdom is almost a 1/2 day park for us (though, probably not for OP who hasn't had a chance to experience all there is to offer there for the first time).

My brother and sister in law are huge Disney fans and go there yearly. I have a child, but would love it with just my husband if we didn't.

Are you kidding? I have a friend who practically lives at Disney. I bore of it much more easily, but whatever floats her boat.

We did go to WDW for our honeymoon. Very childless at the time.

Are you going mid week? I've only been to AK once, but there was not enough there to fill up a whole day. (Spouse went again recently and still agrees with this assessment). Just wondering if you have a backup plan if you finish up early.

We have family in Orlando, so make it out about once every 3 years. Otherwise, we live a few hours from DisneyLand, so have been there infinitely more times.

This is a point of much debate among Disney fans. There is some truth for sure because the park closes at dusk. Today, for example, the park closes at 5pm. So on your Animal Kingdom day, you do need something to do with the rest of your evening. This is not the case at the other 3 parks where you could stay later if you want to. The other parks have specific night time shows (parades, fireworks, etc.).

As for if there is enough to do at AK, there definitely is. The problem is that most people don't take the time to do it all. They hit the major rides and they're done. The issue is that AK is different. The park itself is an attraction. There is so much to see and most people blow right by it all. It is the lushest, most detailed park of the four. You can definitely spend a full day and more to take it all in.

And don't miss the Finding Nemo show .

I agree with both of you MonkeyMama and DisneySteve regarding the park.

When the park was new, we checked out every nook and cranny--the tree of life with its amazing, wonderful details, a ride on the train to conservation station with a petting zoo, walks through Maharajah Jungle Trek and Pangani Forest Exploration Trail and so on. Our son spent many fun hours in The Boneyard digging for fossils when he was younger.

But, our DS is older now. We might go on one of the trails once in while. (We went on the Maharajah Jungle Trek on our last visit).
The attractions--Dinosaur--I will go on that if DS is with us (and I wear earplugs because it is too loud IMHO)--DH won't ride it.
It's Tough to Be a Bug--was cute the first few times, but it's not our favorite attraction.
Expedition Everest--DH and I get motion sick from it. DS is the only one who will ride it.
Kali River Rapids--Nobody ever wants to get wet (and sometimes you get soaked on this ride!)--keep in mind our visits are generally not in the summer.
I like the Flights of Wonder show--but, it's not something we watch on every visit.
So you can see how this is going?

My top faves are the Safari attraction, The Festival of the Lion King (My top favorite of all Disney park shows) and Finding Nemo (It's a wonderful show!). A lot of times, if it is just DH and myself--we will just do a few things at a relaxed pace and then go to another park later on.

Remember that if you decide to stay longer and want to do the other two parks, you can add days to your existing tickets.

We go every year. We used to go every month (at least) to DL when we lived in SoCal.
