  • Differences between introverts and extroverts as far as spending

The article below says that introversion has nothing to do with shyness --- instead, it's all about how you derive your energy. Introverts get energy through solitude and reflection, according the article, and extroverts from social interaction.

But I feel the article does not hit on other key differences between both groups.

I've heard that extroverts, in general spend money more frivolously than do introverts? Is there any truth to this?

Where is the article? I am an introvert. And, I have been guilty of foolish spending too. I think perhaps extroverts spend more "foolish" money on the social level like eating out, travel, clothes, etc? Just a hunch, I don't know. Whereas maybe introverts tend to spend more on their solitary pursuits. I have spent money on stuff like electronics, music instruments and so forth that others might find foolish.

I don't think spending habits can be characterized through personality type in any real meaningful way. One might be able to say extroverts are candidates for spending more money socially and on entertainment where it's shared with other people, and introverts might spend money on comforts of their own spaces. There's too much else at play including habits, how one was raised to view and spend money, etc. Personality type could be an influencing factor, but not a staid explanation of how one deals with their own finances.
      History will judge the complicit.

I bet its not so much a psychological thing but a cultural thing. When you want to be with people more, you do that in a way that tends to spend money in our type of society: you go out with friends to get drinks, dinner, partying, group shopping, etc. You probably care more about social influence -- maybe there is a higher tendency to keep up with the Jones'. Who knows, I think it makes sense though.

I think personality types definitely influence one's spending, but it certainly isn't the only factor. I know people that are pretty outgoing that are a mess financially. But, I also know some outgoing types that have their finances well in order.

I am an extrovert and I am quite frugal. And I love sharing my frugal secrets to those who wish to listen!

I don't think spending money will depend on a character trait like introvert or extrovert. Both introverts as well as extroverts can spend money but the reasons for spending money might be different.

                  +1

However I think if you HAD TO say one is more frugal I would say introverts could have more success. The reason why is introverts like solitude and solitary hobbies (depending on your income level) are usually cheaper.

Lets say you get a 20K introvert and a 20k extrovert. With 20k right off the bat you can't fool around with your money anyways. The introvert would probably buy Netflix and Hulu and probably some nice kitchen wear to cook at home and furniture for their house. The extrovert not only needs kitchen wear and furniture for their house but they will also have the urge to go out and socialize with movies, eating out, clubbing, dresses for clubbing etc. Where as the introvert will stay home and watch Netflix only.
