    I think that's his concern - "skim to not live so tight" really means increase your standard of living. If you wanted to dip into the EF for a 1 time purchase of a small luxury ($500 for new cookware or something) maybe he wouldn't mind. It's the permanently increased standard of living that scares him, and I agree.

      Probably so but I'd like to increase our cost of living a little. I don't know how you budget such a thing. Mostly it's been raises have been used, but the price of other things like food, electric, heating has gone up and kids make us do more laundry, use more food/etc. So in a way it's a wash.
