  • Interview for part time job today

I have an interview this afternoon for part time work. I'm still very undecided about this and really need to try and make up my mind. I was referred by a friend for the job, when I was mentioning in passing that I should make some money on the side. Now, I don't know if I want to do it. I would love the extra cash, but I'm not sure it's worth it.

The pay is $25 per hour and the hours are Friday evenings for 4 hours and Saturday afternoons for 4 hours. I'm worried about committing every Friday evening and every Saturday afternoon. I work about 38 hours a week now.

The pay is pretty low but it would give me some spending money.

    I just cannot decide!

    Any things I should consider?

If you were referred by a friend and you were half serious about it, check it out for 6 months and see where it lands you. Set a savings goal, or save up for something you want, or something you want to pay off, and then be done. Or, continue on and tackle more debt or more savings.

Is it fair to take a position with the intention of only working 3-4 months ?

It's appealing to save a few bucks for Christmas.

Would you burn your friend if you only stayed in the position 3-4 months? I think only you can know/judge that.

In most cases, employers hiring part-time employees are not necessarily looking for long-term commitments. They simply need a fill-in for a temporary period, normally between 6mo-1yr (at most). Many employers do transition part-timers to full-time positions, but that's based on the employer's need and the employee's performance & willingness to stay.

Personally, I wouldn't feel bad at all about accepting a part-time job knowing that I might only be there for a few months. The only reason I wouldn't is if there is significant training involved (again, not often the case for part-timers). I'd say take the job. Stay for 3-4 months, see how it goes for you, then you can re-evaluate and see if you want to stick with the part-time work, or pursue a full-time position. In the meantime, save your part-time earnings with a smile!
