I prefer to carry about $20 but generally have $0. I have $0 right now. Generally my husband carries the cash so he can pay for our meals out and since most of the time I am with him, its fine. In desperate circumstances, there are ATMs everywhere in my area (city living) and I do carry my debit card in addition to my credit card. We pay cash for eating out since its quicker and I will make sure we have cash before going to festivals. Everything else goes on credit for the rewards.

How much money do you have in your wallet right now?

A ten dollar bill and around 41 cents in change. The ten dollar bill is so I'll have cash if I need it but won't be tempted to use it in a vending machine because it's not a small enough bill.
The change is whatever I've picked up off the ground over the past few months. Eventually I'll get enough and then end up buying a vending machine drink with it.

Usually 0 dollars. Currently $400 that I won playing blackjack on vacation. It's only there until I can get to the bank and deposit it into our checking account.
I usually have zero cash, although I do get a couple hundred out before I go on vacation.
As far as examples people have given about when a person needs cash, splitting meals has never been a problem. I eat out with groups of people quite frequently, and the restaurants have never had a problem putting specific amounts on different credit cards.
I don't go anywhere else that requires cash.

I have $25.65 in cash right now. Normally, I like to have about $80-100, so I am a little low.Originally posted by jeffrey View PostHow much money do you have in your wallet right now? I was thinking about your thread recently when I ran across a couple more establishments which only took cash. One was Randy's Donuts in Los Angeles. Randy's did have an ATM right out front. The other establishment was Vinnie Van Go Go's (a pizza establishment) in Savannah. Vinnies had a million signs posted everywhere that they only take cash. When we were in Savannah, we needed some coins for a parking meter, too. (Coins are usually my downfall, but funny enough we found a meter right in front of a bank.Originally posted by disneysteve View PostI had a related thread a while back: http://www.savingadvice.com/forums/g...s-no-cash.html. I was very surprised to see how many people carry zero cash routinely. I can't imagine every walking out of my house with no money.

I like this question! Right now I have $200 in grocery cash, as we've been under spending for weeks and I've accumulated a surplus, plus another $129 in accumulated weekly spending money (mad money if you will), which I rarely spend because 1) our budget is adequate for 99.9% of our needs and wants, and 2) I'm an avid runner/hiker/biker, so am usually too tired and content to even contemplate going out somewhere to spend money once I get home.
I track our budget, and have come to appreciate the simplicity of cash for small, ongoing purchases like groceries. It doesn't require any online follow ups to make sure the charge receipt I have on hand matches what the bank processes, and it allows me to remain conscious on exactly how much money is passing through my hands.
We do use a rewards credit card for pretty much everything else, but I've enjoyed paying cash for groceries for some years now, and attribute using cash to almost always ending up under budget.

I thought of another cash need - tolls. I can't hand the guy at the bridge my debit card. The booth on the turnpike doesn't take credit cards.
Locally, we have EZ Pass but that doesn't work everywhere and not everyone has it.
Another one is public transit. When we take the train into Philadelphia, we need cash to buy tickets. No debit. No credit. The ticket machine is cash only.Steve

I have a cynical reason to carry at least a smidge of cash when I go out. "Mugger money." I'm out alone on the city streets a lot, so I figure it is not out of the question that some day I will be held up. I'd rather have a few bills to turn over than have a crazy person think that I am holding out on him/her. Sometimes I carry as little as $2-5."There is some ontological doubt as to whether it may even be possible in principle to nail down these things in the universe we're given to study." --text msg from my kid

Around $200. We wanted to look for some wedding bands in the city and I thought they'd cost more. We had some gold to 'sell' to the jeweler so we're gonna pay little as manufacturing costs. I need to take the money off the wallet now and leave around $30, which I normally carry around.
