My son is just a preschooler but I had a random thought. We don't earn a whole lot but we work hard. Wouldn't it be something if all our saving and being frugal/smart means one day he won't get any financial aid because we bothered to live below our means and have savings. Just a thought. Probably not a good one to have. However, you don't see me spending money and quitting work to get on assistance(never want to be by the way but not knocking it for those in need) so it' s kind of the same, but college costs are scary.

college education for a child

The single best thing you can teach your child is what it means to be responsible. The broader the better. One subset of this is financial responsibility.
Piss a liberal off and make money. Show them living off public dime should not be an option. Secondly, if you are financially responsible for yourself, you will see that funding higher education for your kids could be as simple as co-signing a loan, or possibly paying cash each month for the expense from age 19-23.

I know that will happen to us. We make quite a lot but are saving the majority for our retirement because that way we have something when we hit 40. But kids are expensive but thankfully we've saved since we had jobs the maximum we can and cut corners and never lived up to our full income.
But the truth is that our savings will affect our kids. They won't qualify for financial aid. But can we really afford to pay for college 100%? I don't but I hope so.

If our son plans to pursue a masters etc that is on his dime as we have no plans of contributing more. We are in our 40's and maxing out retirement and getting ready!
