  • Vaca to KC?

Any one do a family vaca to Kansas City? Its relatively close for us and we're considering a trip this summer. Interested to hear the best things to do/see but mostly where to stay?? We're going over the 4th and I think we'll probably hit the KC Riverfest for fireworks that night so I thought I'd like to be downtown but even though I get our hotel for free parking was like $15/day. Looking at maybe staying near the Country Club Plaza instead but I can't find a whole lot on what to do in that area other than shopping which doesn't interest me too much. Any experiences appreciated!

Don't have anything to add experience-wise. Just hope that all of the tornadoes and bad weather are out of there by the time you go.

Ha thanks for the concern. We live in the midwest. Tornados are an annual occurence and wouldn't really affect our vaca planning, plus tornado season is long over by the hot humid month of July.

First thing that came to mind when I saw the title is "she's moving a cow to Kansas City?"

Vaca in Spanish & Portuguese is a cow.
Don't torture yourself, thats what I'm here for.

Union Station is pretty interesting and is linked to the Crown Center with activities, shopping, restaurants and hotels. The Hallmark Visitors Center is there; free and interesting as well.

Down in Independence, is the Truman Presidential Library, about 35 minutes south of the airport. I think I went to a Toy Museum with my kids there. The art museum is very nice and free on Saturday mornings, at least when we were there.

Jazz is big in Kansas City. Get a tour of the Harley Davidson plant. Kansas City Royals baseball is fun! I've been to Oceans of Fun and Worlds of Fun many times and enjoyed my time there.

I'd check out VisitKC to find more things to do...and there is a quite a bit. Have a great time!!

Let's see...we took a family vacation to Kansas City over a Columbus Day 3 day weekend--several years ago. It was before Southwest had online checkin (they used to hand out plastic cards with A, B or C on them when you arrived at the gate). It took us 2 hours to drive to the airport where it normally took about an hour (Friday afternoon and the traffic was crazy). We were worried about making our flight. We ended up with "C" boarding passes (which means "C"enter seat--LOL) But anyway, let's see...
I can't remember which hotel we stayed in (I looked at a list of nearby hotels, but none of them are ringing a bell. There was a fancy-smancy shopping mall nearby and we walked by a statue of Winston Churchill on our way to the Mall.
We did stop by the Hallmark Visitors Center
We visited the Steamboat Arabia Museum
              The Truman Presidential Library

              The Truman Home

              Truman Farm Home

DH has an interest in military history, so we went to Fort Leavenworth

We had an excellant time on our visit! That's all I can remember....

If you're a soccer fan I highly recommend trying to checkout a Sporting K.C. game at Sporting Park! We made a trip to KC last month for a game and were glad we did... we're not Sporting fans and were cheering for the other team but the home fans were very nice and it was nice to see a sold out stadium cheering, jumping and singing together! MLS needs more fans like these!
