Any Progressive policy holders use the Snapshot technology to lower their rate? We just switched from Geico to Progressive ($300 savings per policy period! ) and I signed us up. Interested how much it saved you if you've done it?!

For those not familiar the device plugs into your diagnostic port and rates your driving risk based on 3 factors: how hard you hit the brakes, how often you drive and how much you drive between the hours of midnight and 4 am. Those 3 things apparently gauge your accident risk and you get a lower rate the lower they determine your risk to be. You get a discount right away for using it and after 5 months you get a set ongoing discount based on how you rated. Neat idea. Says it can't increase your rate, only decrease.

Yup, and I think this has been discussed before. Try a forum search.

Question was posed in 2011 and only one person reported doing it long enough to receive savings. Didn't think it was hurting anything to see if anyone had jumped on the bandwagon over the last couple years.

I wonder, though. When EZPass came out, there were concerns that they would start tracking where we went or issuing speeding tickets based on how long it took us to get from one exit to another (if we went 70 miles in an hour in a 55 zone, for example). None of that has happened.

I think it is fine for them to track behavior since behavior does contribute to risk. As long as they won't raise your rate for less than optimal behavior, it sounds okay.

Not quite 100% true... Law enforcement can get a warrant for your EZPass (or similar) activity, and this is frequently used to nail down a suspect's locations/movements during police investigations. However, it is only a factor if you're a suspect of a crime, since it's only available to police by warrant (which IMO is legit).

With the above said, I agree with you. It's important to note that these chips DO NOT track GPS location or traveled routes or anything like that. They only monitor time, date, and driving input (gas, brake, miles, etc.).

Honestly, I'd be okay with doing it. I know that I drive pretty reasonably, so it would likely only help me (although due to the nature of my job, I do have to occasionally drive in to work at 3-4AM or earlier, or drive home at 10-12PM or later).

Another thing to consider is just knowing it is there can make people drive better. I recently had a hybrid Camry loaner when my car was in the shop. The dash display has an efficiency indicator when you are driving in a way that maximizes fuel efficiency and I didn't have the car long before I found myself adjusting my driving to keep that light on as much as possible.

Courts have ruled that police can track people through cell phones WITHOUT a warrant, so I wouldn't be too worried about the EZPass!

yup cell phones and credit cards are a few examples of tracking that we allow. What cracks me up is people "checking in" on social media with there whereabouts.....just asking for trouble!

He who sacrifices freedom for security deserves neither.

Personally, I love the check in feature on FB, it got a family member of mine arrested. He fully deserved it

ya I don't buy into the whole big brother conspiracy theory. As long as its optional and can only help my rates, I'm game. I don't plan on commiting any major crimes either so I'm not too worried about the gov't attempting to track me down.
