So you are meeting them in public - in the public area of your apartment building like maybe the lobby. When I (or others) say to meet in public, we mean don't give out your address or have them come into your home.

I've bought and sold countless things on craigslist and never had a bad experience. I also don't have a problem with people coming to my house or going to theirs (maybe I'm too trusting?). DH and I both bought our vehicles on craigslist, we've sold 2 vehicles, we sold a house and have rented ours twice (this last time we had 2 deposit offers in less than 24 hours of listing!), used it to get all the pavers for our patio last summer, we've even used it to find contractors for housework. Still need to check their references and insurance papers but its great for small businesses becuase the advertising is free. On top of that we're often able to get rid of stuff we don't want to haul -- got free moving boxes last time we moved and conversely gave them away free after we were done with them, had someone pick up chain link fence we didn't have the ability to haul to the recycling center, old appliances, etc. the list is endless.
