  • Planning used car purchase

Now that my ride's odometer has surpassed 180,000 miles I foresee replacing my 1996 Saturn SL2 in the near future, and solicit the collective SavingAdvice.com forum braintrust for recommended replacements:

Current Budget: $15430, which would include tax and title and registration transfers. I would pay up to $17500 if it is still under warranty and I can expect to drive this replacement vehicle for another fifteen years or until some knobhead collides with me.

Current use: personal, averaging 900 miles a month over long-term, 400 miles a month at present.

Current Environment: temperate rainforest area (between two mountain ranges), hilly, occasional light snow, urban area.

    Required Specifications:
four-door sedan, 2005 model or newer, automatic transmission, low maintenance, high reliability

    Desired Specifications:
    • fuel efficiency exceeds 24 mpg city, 34 mpg highway.
    • At least one of stability control, traction control.
    • Seat belts for all five passengers.
    • Rear window defogger.
    • Legroom in rear passenger area to exceed 35 inches,
    • seating capacity 5 normal-sized homo sapiens,
    • 12.1 cubic feet or greater cargo space.
    • 124 hp or better engine.

A model that is not going to jack up my insurance (high risk of theft, favored among 24-and-under-aged speed demons). High probability of surpassing 200,000 miles on the odometer before going to the car graveyard. No major recalls.

I do not have a large family nor people who have huge sports equipment, nor large animals that require transport to parks for exercise, so I do not need a wagon.

Replacement vehicles I have collected some information on: Honda Accord Hybrid, Ford Fusion, Toyota Prius, Toyota Camry.

What other makes, models and years should I be considering?

Look into the 2006 Hyundai Sonata. It's the older body style. You can get it in a V6 and get close to 30mpg highway. my friend has one, and she has over 150K on it. It's still running strong.

I got a 2010 Hyundai Elantra when it came time to replace my Honda Civic. It meets all of your list requirements AND I got mine for $16,200 OTD with around 14k miles on it.

You do want to do a consumer reports search and use edmunds.com to check for years and models and prices, but I do think the newer Hyundai models are a great option.

If you want to go bigger than the Elantra, then I agree with the Sonata - it's more similar to the camery in size but still a great choice and cheaper so you can get a newer model.

Subaru Outback. Surprisingly frugal and robust. Mine lasted 126K miles and 10 years with only two repairs: an alternator replacement, and a wheel bearing replacement.

Because they're AWD you won't get 34 mpg, but they're cheap to maintain, comfortable for real people, and great in rainy and snowy weather.

My other suggestion: a Mazda wagon. Since they're not Honda/Toyota, they're cheaper, but they also have good reliability stats.
