I've found some of the best cars at police auctions. And they've been running for years and I only have to spend between $300-$3000 for them, not a big investment at all for a car.

Used car for those who already have experience and maintenance knowledge of a car. But for newbies new is good option. But as you mentioned that you will get five for old and 10 for new, then you need to compare the market and then decide which one suites your pocket.

I would choose the new car option because so far I only bought new cars, I found out that it saved more for me on repairs and all the hassles down the road. If it is a new car, you would take better care of it and make it last longer.

In this scenario I would go for the new -- because with a 10K downpayment you won't be immediately up side down, which is one of the major draw backs in buying a new car.

How do you know you've saved money by buying new cars if you've never bought a used car?

I disagree with your second point also... for me, I'd take care of the car the same - whether I bought it new or used. I just don't buy into the idea that new cars are better because "you know their history" or "you know where they've been."

That was nice of your dad to offer you extra cash towards a car for your family. A new car verses a used car all depends on what you are looking for and what you have to spend. A car is not something that rises in value over time. You need to take time and research your car. If you don't have the cash, a used car can do you just fine. If you purchase a used car, you can probably use it until it will no longer run, although if you have a new car, you may be able to sell it later on down the road.

I did end up purchasing a NEW Chevy Equinox a couple weeks after my initial post.
IT is an LT with something called a sport package which has chrome wheels which are very attractive.
I used my parents gift of ten grand, $7100 I got for my used Saturn, and cash out of the bank for the rest. I was able to save the cash by being frugal and driving used cars in the past, paying them off, and banking extra money I had by not having a payment.

The good thing is I have a warranty I suppose. IT made financial sense to buy new with the gift coupled with rebates for new cars.
I got about a 2 grand gm discount, a 1 grand rebate just for buying the car, and I think I got another 1 grand rebate bc it has a v6 engine.

I had to go to many dealerships to try to find a 2012 car. The 2013 was out and there were just a few 2012 left in the state. There was just a small rabate for the 2013. i got an upgraded model bc that is all they had left to sell.

I will have to post later exact car price. I forgot but it was about 27 grand before rebates(yikes, that was a shocker to me!!)

I was offered everywhere from 4 grand to $7500 for my used SAturn. I guess they give you a low amount if they don't plan to sell it on the lot. My old car is up for sale at $8900 at the dealership who bought it. The places offering 4 grand I think would have sold it at auction where a dealer would buy it and in turn sell to a consumer.

I do love the extra space, hatch for groceries. I like the back up video camera when I back up. It's hard to see kids behind your car since it's up high I like that feature.
One downside is the v6 engine is not as good on gas.

Well here's to hopin it lasts me at least 8 years. I got white with dark gray blackish interior. White gets filthy instantly. The dark interior is hard to keep vaccummed up.
I had a silver gray with medium gray interior. The old car in silver was so easy to keep clean.

After I got the new equinox my friends were like "lol I don't know how you made it three years with a kid in a Saturn"(I have one child who is three)
I just say I was used to it and it saved me money It wasn't awful, just not ideal. I am grateful, and appreciate it.
