  • Not going to renew my cable (Netflix, Hulu, Prime)

My one year promotion is up and the prices are going to be raised - I know they will probably counter and give me the promotion again, but I think I'd like to try out the no cable tv route for a bit.

I have Netflix and Amazon Prime (with an Xbox for access), so think we might just do that. Was also thinking about Hulu Plus? Anyone have this? Or is Netflix, Hulu Plus, and Amazon Prime overkill?

    Netflix 7.99
    Hulu Plus 7.99
Aamzon - FREE (well not free, but I would have amazon prime regardless of the streaming features)

The problem with Hulu Plus is that you can't stream "free" Hulu content to your TV if you subscribe to Hulu Plus. (You basically pay more for less!) But, there are ways around it - we use Play On. Just a heads up.

I don't think it is overkill - between the three services you can get just about anything - so it's about a $15/month cable replacement. If you don't care about the Hulu Plus shows then I wouldn't bother - but there is a lot of programming on Hulu Plus and you get shows just a few hours after they originally air.

Call your cable provider and tell them to extend the promotional price for another year. It worked for me once.

But why would you want to get locked into a contract for another year? You can save a ton of money by putting up an antenna for local stations, and supplementing your viewing with netflix, hulu, and even DVDs from the local library.

I own an Xbox 360 and it has a Hulu Plus App on it, so I'm positive I would be able to watch Hulu Plus content on the tv.

Yeah I'm going to see what they say - or entertain the idea of dropping current provider altogether and go with AT&T just for internet because they have really good deal on 18mbs at $45 a month (year contract).

Yes, you will get Hulu Plus content on the TV. My point is you can't get any regular Hulu programming on your TV without a workaround like Play On (That's just what we use - I am sure there are other workarounds). All you will get is the "extras" that come with Hulu Plus.

They don't really seem to advertise that little catch - so just a heads up.

This is what we do. Antenna for locals, netflix and DVDs from the library. More than enough programming available.

Don't you need a computer on to use playon on the tv? I have a roku box and was trying to figure that out.

Well, this can be circumvented by loading up regular Hulu content on your laptop and connecting it to your TV with an HDMI cable. Most newer laptops have a HDMI port, and if yours doesn't, you can get a DVI-to-HDMI converter. Kind of a pain but it'll get the job done.

This doesn't always work. I just tried this recently with Comcast for my cable internet, because it's really not worth $40 a month, but they said no and the alternative is AT&T. Probably why they said no...they're aware that the alternative is even worse.

My husband insists we get cable for his baseball watching. only sport he likes but it's a loonnnggg season!!!!
I love netflix streaming bc I don't have to do library returns, but my library has an amazing video selection. I still think it's weird some of the even racy dvds they have.
