If you factor in needing live in care for when you get sick, then the saying that two can live as cheap as one is probably true (assuming both people don't get sick).

If you are living by yourself and break your hip slipping in the bathtub, it might be a few weeks before anyone finds you...and think of the expense of cleaning up *that* mess!

Except that usually if you are the same age and one gets sick sometimes the second person isn't able bodied enough to care for the sick person anyway. Try to lift someone bedridden or needing a wheelchair to give them a bath or dress. A 70 year old woman lifting a 70 year old man? Not going to happen.

As to living with roommates, hence why I asked him if he planned on living alone ever. He said he liked saving the money it is substantial. About $1k/month. Allows for a lot more freedom. That and not having a car since without a family he makes do without one.

Well, that is true enough. There is also the SS income factor though. A person can get half the SS payment of their spouse, even if they have never worked a day for wages in their life. In that case, they are living off 1.5x the income of the single person and if they can reduce some expenses, then two might live as cheaply as one if you factor in this extra SS income.
