  • How much are extra 3 weeks worth? I'm going to China to study!

I am very happy to be approved for language training in China this year!

In my job, I don't need to speak Chinese, but they are supporting it for general development, and because I want to do it.
So my employer won't pay for my expenses, but they will pay my salary for 3 weeks the course lasts, as if I'm working. So it won't count against my vacation time.

What is the worth of additional 3 weeks to study something you want? To me it is a lot!

The course and the accommodations are covered by the University that invited us, but I'll pay my own airfare and food/incidentals.

    1. I get 60 hours of university classes, plus access to cheap tutoring.

    2. After 1-2 pm I am free to roam around the city. (it is kind of a partial vacation). The problem is it unbelievably hot there in July.

    3. I get total immersion when it comes to speaking the language.

    3. I get to eat cheap delicious food every day.

    4. I won't have any commute (accommodations are in the same building as the classes).

    5. I get to vacation some place in Asia for 1 week -- I'll attach a week of vacation before my class. Normally, I would not fly all the way to Asia for just one week, but since I will be going there anyway... I don't know where we'll go - it will depend on where we can get a stopover on our flight. We'll have to be flexible. But even if we don't find a stopover, we can go some place in China - either come back to Sichuan(where I studied during my second semester abroad) or stay in Shanghai for a week -- also not bad!

My husband will come with me for 2 weeks (1 week of vacation and one week of classes).

The only downside is not seeing the baby for 4 weeks (China would be too challenging for a toddler under 2 -- finding clean food, water, baby appropriate transportation and reliable daycare during my classes is hard. Not to mention a 20 hour flight to get there and back!). So we'll be leaving the baby with grandma.

I think it is very nice of my employer and I'm quite happy!

    Enjoy.

    Where will you go?

My wife and I spend 3 weeks and a half vacationing in China back in 2004 I think it was. We went to Beijing, Xi'an, Guilin, Hong Kong and Shanghai. I really enjoyed it, my wife enjoyed it but was put off by the general insalubrity (especially in washrooms) -but it's probably better since the Olympics.

I had a friend in Beijing that was taking Mandarin lessons with whom I meet up with. It was a specialized school filled with north americans and europeans (meet a few), it was a couple months long though. Honnestly, I don't think you'll get much from a 3 week course, but if the primary reason is to travel and see the country, then who cares.

    Have fun.

I've been to China 6 times, for a sum total of about 10 months. I'm very familiar with local realities.

I am currently going to class 3 times a week. And long time ago I spent a semester studying full time in Chengdu (Sichuan province). But I don't really get to practice outside the classroom now. Immersion works. And yes, I enjoy travel and would go anywhere. So the fact that I don't have to spend my vacation time is a big deal to me.

        Cool, have a good time.

May I ask, are you of chinese origin or simply interested in chinese culture and language? I've always been really interested, but not at your level.

No, I'm a blonde laowai (though my husband's family is of Chinese origin, but that was not what sparked my interest in learning Chinese.) The first 2 times I went was not even my choice - it was a part of the school program I was in at the time. After the second time, I thought I'd go study there for a semester -- I didn't have much money as a student, and it was a cheap, safe country and it looked like it would be fun. And it was!

Really great that your employer does this. Can I ask what you do?

I posted a couple weeks ago about wanting to take a volunteer trip to South America. We've decided its not in the cards for us this year, but I'm going to start taking Spanish classes this summer. I've always been interested in exploring other languages and cultures but just haven't had a lot of opportunity to do it. I'd love, love, love an opportunity like yours.

Nika! What a wonderful, wonderful opportunity! Your employer sounds really open to expanding their employees. Do they have a formal process for employees to propose such skill development? At any rate, I'm happy for you. (Sorry you will not see baby for so long, though.)

What a wonderful opportunity! I hope you'll take time to go to the Panda Sanctuary and on to LeShan to visit the incredible Giant Buddha, centuries old carved into the side of a mountain. DH and I were seconded by our University to teach Management Principles at GUUFS in Guangzhou, Guandong Province [University specializes in teaching English]

Students will be thrilled to have the opportunity to talk to you and practice their oral English Language skills. There are tons of newish, inexpensive, government supported 'Resorts' that offer all inclusive 2/3 day holidays. Practice your Mandarin skills in stores, restaurants and bus routes. Just reading labels is a challenge!
