Sometimes I think most people stopped evolving in high school. This whole mentality of keeping up with other people, or trying to impress the neighbors is like that.

Not that consumerism is a bad thing. It provides comforts and allows us all to feed our families. Problem is when people go overboard, which they often do. When they get a reality check, we have recessions.

I haven't watched the movie yet, but I'll add it to my queue.

I want to see it so hopefully our library has it. I know Redbox doesn't carry it and I don't do Netflix as there is no time in the day.

While I usually over analyze movies, I felt this was purely a popcorn flick. Worth watching once. Interesting story, but the ending felt a little forced (which I won't spoil). I won't complain for watching Demi though

Watched the movie last night. Interesting story line. Makes you wonder if that marketing technique is utilized. Whole movie was kind of sad

I don't think it is to that extent but it is on a smaller scale. I know on college campuses, they recruit students to market certain products to their friends, which is basically what was going on in this movie.

We watched it last night and felt it was good, but kind of scary. I think to an extent it had a lesson to be learned about conspicious consumption.

Very weird but as I was reading this thread a song in the background from the Temptations(1969) called "Don't let the Jones' get you down" was playing on my R&B classics station . I'm LMAO. It echoes everything that's been said for the 40+ years since that song came out.

People will never learn I guess.

I think you are right...they get jealous and want to have the same or better.

This is a film all salespeople should watch, because it hammers close to home, and contains some nuggets of techniques to impart. Playing out like a social satire on consumerism and advertising, and just about poking fun at everyone who's guilty of keeping up with the Joneses, in literal fashion here a family of four becomes the quintessential personification of just those successful people whom we all aspire to become, emulate, or just plain desire to excel over.
